I just took my Prius in today to have the update done. I haven't noticed any difference yet, but there is a particular pothole I am going to drive over later on to see if I can duplicate that "floating feeling". Hopefully all is well now.

As an aside, the dealer also changed the reverse beeping to one beep for me (no charge) and confirmed that the oil change interval is now every 10,000 miles.

I have a 2009 Prius, but can't help not seeing all of the press on the 2010's. Of course, as soon as I heard this was a software glitch, I figured this would be an up-grade via the ODB port - fast and simple... so it looks like it is going that way so far.

I wonder if Toyota would share the software upgrade, or provide it to Prius Owners Groups, and the clubs can do the upgrades at a meeting or something. (Rhetorical question, liability and lawyers will kick into that and kill the idea even before it gets to the gate).

But an appearance by a Toyota tech with his diagnostic computer and ODB-unit would be a really cool guest speaker at any club meeting, eh?

    Rick,

Have you noticed a difference in the braking characteristics of the car?

Any thoughts/observations that this fix might have on MPG's?

None yet - but remember this is an update to the ABS ECU.

MPG was lower when I picked it up (from 52.7 to 51.9 @ over 300 miles in the trip), but that's because they had the car on for some time and the HV battery was at 2 bars when I got the car back. Generally the case if it's left on during portions of the service.

I'll keep an eye on overall MPG post update though. I'm near filling time anyway, so I can hopefully trend the next couple of tanks.

Update: ABS ECU is the braking ECU - it's the same single unit. Braking feel is slightly modified (see further posts in this thread).

How did you manage to watch Russell's video? I'm getting a message that it's a private video...I can't watch it. Dang.

I guess I shouldn't have debated the whole brake issue so strongly with him! ;)

Any idea where the access point is to update/change the software? In the engine compartment, or under the dash?

Also, after the software mod, does braking characteristics change?...and I'm NOT talking about those over a bump. I'm talking about any braking characteristic changes under NORMAL braking. For example, is the 60-0mph stopping distance the same after the software mod? Since the recall is "optional", I'd like to know about any downside (if there are any) to the braking caharcteristics. Since i'm a Prius owner that never felt this was an issue (to begin with), I'd like to know about the con's of such a change. I suspect there are some con's...if not, why didn't Toyota make this software mod when it first introduced the g3?

Please look at my pictures and read the captions. I explained it was under the steering wheel in the footwell area. You can see it in the photo which is zoomed out a bit showing the cable plugged into it.

I'm waiting to see if I can get more detailed info on exactly what the change does but for now it is best summed up by saying it shortens the time from when regenerative braking deactivates and friction braking activates.

Did they flash the firmware in ACC mode? If it is in IG-ON mode, HV battery would keep the lead acid voltage high.

I don't want to use the wrong mode name, but I'm pretty sure it was one push of the start button with no foot on the brake. I don't remember the whole dash being lit up so it couldn't have been two pushes or actually started...

That's the ACC mode then. I thought it only powers the radio, sound system and power windows; unable to connect to OBDII. At least that's my experience with the 2006 with dyno-scan. It seems TechStream is able to flash the firmware in ACC mode.

I had the car's ABS flashed just an hour ago. I know someone in another thread mentioned that "The brakes feel tighter. The brake reponse was immedately." After testing out the regular braking response I really could not easily tell the difference - and I was also doing braking testing the hour before I brought it into the dealer.

I suppose there may be a slight quicker response of the brakes proportional to how much you press, but if there is, it isn't enough to throw you off and have to get readjusted to your car again or enough to be disagreeable, which is what I was initially worried about. If anything it may be a better overall feel and more of a linear response. The brakes are still definitely less "grabby" than my TSX.

    Hope that helps!

Hmm, I sure wish I would have taken better note of it now usbseawolf. Only reason I am pretty sure it was ACC is because in the photo of the car with the computer on the roof the dash is not lit except for the clock and odometer reading. I'm pretty damn sure that I took that shot right after he was completed and I don't remember him getting into the car to push the button until he was actually ready to drive it off for its car wash... Sorry I cannot say it with 100% certainty though.
