Re: 2010 Prius Mud Flaps??? (A hopeful alternative)

A friend just alerted me to the fact that WeatherTech/Macneil Automotive had available MudFlaps on their website.

Checking for myself, I found in their product offerings list the following:
    MudFlap No-Drill Digital Fit
Plugging in our car information, it was discovered that it is currently not available for the 2010 GIII Prius.

What I did do was fill out the Product Request Form.

It is my hope that everyone else who has yet to purchase mudflaps for their car and thinks that going the UK Dealership route is too pricey for what we would get, would go to the Weathertech website and fill out the product request form for mudflaps for our car.

It's not available for older Priuses either.

More! The generic picture they show looks a lot longer than the imported versions, but who knows.

I did it for the vent visors a couple months ago. I'll do it again for the mud flaps.

Funny. I didn't get the instructions with mine and had to look them up online. Just for the back since you had to make your own holes for all 3 of the holes.

In the end it wasn't a big deal...

Someone mentioned FE. It would hurt there fleet averages.

they aren't boat sails... LOL If they are an available dealer installed/available option, how does that affect their fleet mileage?

What about a roof rack? Wouldnt that effect fleet milage too? But they sell them as an option.

Hey don't kill the messenger. I did notice a ~2mpg drop after I put mine on. But that was just about the time we got our rainy fall weather, after that we got the cold temps. So I won't know till next summer if they really did. Also during that time I removed the hubcaps and put center caps on.

One thing I noticed though, when going through a puddle or getting hit by a gust of wind I noticed it more with the mud guards on (drag). So I don't think "sails" is a ridiculous statement. Whether they affect the overall lifetime FE and by how much is just speculation at this point. We need to have rrolf to really test things in his wind tunnel.:)

I'm not too concerned about a minimal drop in MPG from mudflaps, I just hate mud splash up the side of my car. There's lots of road construction in my neighborhood - been at it for at least 4 years, and they say another year to go.

I'd probably get better FE if I lost 50 pounds.

    LOL... I can relate.

Hey I think you on to something. A weight loss program involving the Prius.

    RRolff,

For the rest of us mudslinging hypermilers please consider a mudflap airfoil combination. Forget the fat wing Piper, we want a modern wing with some LEDs, TEFs, and winglets!

Standing by for the test results.

I just put mine on using the instructions on p. 4 of this thread.

The fronts are easy. I note that the front flap pkg included two push-in fasteners. ??

For the rears, I removed the rear tires. There are six nutplates included but only the top hole in each flap can use them. I pre-drilled the holes with a 1/8" drill, and this wasn't in the instructions.

I will check on the mileage hit/enhancement.

Update: after about 140 miles, I'm seeing approximately a 10% increase in mileage. Temps in the 40's to 50's, some rain. More data as time progresses.

I have read through the long Blog on the lack of US/Canadian Prius owners to purchase mudflaps for 2010 other than from Europe. Is that still the situation? if so, can someone repost the site for purchasing the mud flaps? The earlier ebay links did not appear to be active any longer. Thanks so much

If the flaps are aligned properly then both holes in each flap should be able to use the nutplates. Pre-drilling isn't necessary...I used an awl to mark the center for each hole and the screws were self-tapping with a little bit of pressure.
