I honestly don't know, it probably does because it's not going to get to cold. I do remember reading that the inverter coolant system had no thermostat.

i believe we have determined that the coolant system for the inverter has no limiter (thermostat)

since it has no thermostat, its probably not monitored

The NCF document mentions that the inverter water pump is three speed and the coolant temperature is monitored.

thanks for info Ken. with that many monitors, it seems strange that no one has cracked the code yet. inverter temp monitoring and safe levels has had a ton of airplay here.

Nice! 3-Stage Inverter Coolant pump. Mine is only one speed.

I checked and confirmed the inverter coolant pump is relay (ON-OFF) driven shown in the JP Gen2 maintenance manual, so it is single speed.
Of course, the inverter coolant temperature is monitored on the Gen2 too.
Then, the cooling fan will be activated when it detects high temperature.
Then, an explanation mark will be displayed when the temperature becomes too hot.

    Ken,

I thought the inverter coolant pump runs all the time. As soon as the car is in "Ready", the pump comes on.

Yes. The inverter coolant pump relay is ON as soon as the car is in "Ready".
So, it is single speed, no variable speed mechanism.

What temperature sensor could trigger the exclamation mark (MG1, MG2, Inverter, Engine)?

Could we trust the exclamation mark to know if we are putting the inverter at risk with the upper grille fully blocked?

There is no temperature threshold description found on the US NCF and JP maintenance documents.
I believe we can trust the exclamation function threshold.
Before the mark, the cooling fan works hard, and we'll have to consume the extra electric energy.

You don't need a template, or anything else, except some 1/2 inch pipe insulation (about $4 at Ace Hardware) and a pair of scissors. I cut mine a little long and then went back and trimmed the ends a bit to get a good fit, it doesn't need to be exact anyway.

You use 4 pieces for a 100% block of the lower grill, one piece for each of the 4 openings. No need to tie it in just pinch the insulation together and put it in the slots, it expands and holds itself in the opening.

It took me about 10 minutes to install foam insulation I had in the basement to the lower grille. I "borrowed" some tie wraps from work. The foam color blends in nicely with the winter gray color.

    Tools needed---scizzors.
materials----2 pieces of 3/8" foam insulation(it's what I had in the house) and 9 tie wraps.

I was going to do the same thing and make a more or less permanent fixture. There is a place in NC that will make them if they get someone to drop by their 2010 for measurements/fittings. I may still try something like that in the future but for now I use the tubing.

I don't recall seeing this mentioned earlier, but blocking the lower intake makes the vehicle interior quieter, at least if one uses foam pipe insulation. Nice side effect.

Thnx Ken, I'm have my grill blocked on my Gen3, according to your table of course. Do you have a similar table and piccy for the Gen2 as a friend of mine owns a Gen2 and is interested. Can I safely tell him it's ok to block the upper grill, not only in winter but also during summer? Leaving the lower grill open all the time?

Thnx a Prius fan from Holland (Europe)

    Thank you!

following is my personal recommendation for Gen2.
temp in Celsius temp in Fahrenheit lower blocking % upper blocking %
    1 below 5 below 41 90 100
    2 5 - 18 41 - 64 80 100
    3 18 - 30 64 - 86 60 100
    4 above 30 above 86 40 100

note: except long uphill or over 70 mph cruising

It's almost as same as summer setting on my suggestion. :)

I ordered this OBDKey today for 165 dollar. It sends all data through Bluetooth to my cellphone (HTC cruise). Hope it is as good as the Scangauges or Xgauges u guys have.
