2010 Prius EV mode Hack

    That is in no way why I bought the Prius ... I bought it purely from a financial point of view.'

    I like saving money on gasoline, and I HATE sending money to the middle east idiots that rip us off for it.

    To be honest, most of this 'green' movement stuff is a bunch of lies and deceptions, and it's the last thing in the world that I want to be associated with. I almost didn't buy a Prius just because of the stigma that is attached to them .... but alas my pocketbook won out ... and I'm glad it did.

    * To get to 25MPH in EV mode only, car coolant temp has to be at or above approximately 160 degrees F to go faster than 10mph.
    * You can't accelerate too quickly...don't max out beyond the "Power" section of the HSI.
    * If it's hot outside, EV mode may not work well due to the temp of the battery pack.

    Personally, I rarely use EV mode. I may use it to move the car around in the driveway, but beyond that I don't use it much. The quicker you run down the traction battery, the sooner the ICE has to kick in. When it kicks in because the traction battery needs to be charged, ICE is providing drive for the wheels while also providing charge to the battery. When traction battery is in a charged state, the ICE and battery work together to propel the car in a more efficient manner.

    As long as you are under 42ish mph, and you keep the HSI bar below the middle line, you can remain in EV or "stealth" mode. Still, remember...as long as you are using EV only, you are draining the traction battery more quickly, which will require the ICE to kick in sooner. I like to get up to speed using ICE and battery, then coast (where you see NO HSI bar). ScanGauge reads 0 RPMS during this time and you'll see the mileage on your dash read 100...it's a great feeling to know you are moving along with traffic, essentially for free. :) If you lift from the accelerator completely, the car will go into a slight regen charge mode...and you'll feel a slight drag. The trick to efficient coasting is to know exactly where to hold the accelerator to keep the car from going into charge mode OR provide power to the wheels.

    I just found EV + PWR the other day and WOW! It takes off quick and if the battery is on the full side, I can get up to 25mph quite quickly. As far as continuing in EV, just keep a light foot on the throttle enough to keep the ICE from turning on and avoid the line of cars behind you honking to speed up!

    In the PHEV discussion forum, someone found a way to disable the ICE completely by adding a switch to disconnect the EFI fuse and run on EV only up to 45mph or until the HV pack has depleted. You need ScanGauge II to reset the codes. The acceleration is much faster. You can go pass the PWR on the HSI.

    I'm sorry you feel that way about being environmentally responsible. I'm not an extremist when it comes to the Environment. But one has to wonder why all these labels?? by simply being a bit more concerned about our environment, being vigiliant. After all we only have one planet to live on, and if we destroy it, there will be no other. The matter doesn't just involve us, but future generations' security as well. The kind of quantifiable damange is already too evident all around us. Insistant ignorance isn't responsible, but certain political and corporate interest will try and sell you on that, so they can continue to profit. As a species, we all have a shared responsibility and share in the riches of this planet. I can't see anyone taking a predatory view on this issue. I'm sorry, it simply isn't right. It is always " what we should do" and NOT "what we can do". There is nothing wrong with being green.
