That kind of service is typical here in Minnesota as well. Usually just locals working it along with teenagers to do the vacuuming and drying. You get to watch your car go through the wash as well -- long set of glass windows along the wash track. Part of the entertainment factor.

My daughter found the first person experience of being in the car to be pretty entertaining.

The cA carwash employees don't necessarily pay taxes as it has been reported that a lot of them are undocumented workers. Which means they're working mostly for tips too. I don't know if this has been gotten under control or not. I remember it being in the news many years ago.

That's what I was guessing. Maybe I should have put "taxpayers" in quotes....

I'm the guy who posted the original question. Here in Asheville we have car washes with an attendant at both ends. What I want to know is does he park the car in P and shut it off before it's pulled until the end? And at the end, I worry that the attendant will not know how to start the car (foot on pedal, press power switch).

The car won't move when in P. I imagine they put it in N (like any other car) so the track can pull it along.

Many new cars require you to step on the brake before starting, and many have power buttons with keyless entry fobs, so I imagine a guy who does this all day is familiar with these procedures, since these are not unique to the Prius.

As I said in my first response, just to play it safe, I attached the yellow instruction placard to the gear shifter, and probably will for a few more times, since the Prius gear shifter is unique, and a relatively new model.

You should never turn the car off when in an automatic car wash.

It is like driving over a puddle of water. Or driving through a sudden downpour. Or driving down a street when a fire hydrant is open. I suppose a car must be designed to handle that. I am tending to think it is an urban myth and I won't worry about it. But frankly, I don't know.
