First leg of vacation from Akron OH to Western NY -- 238 miles, all but ~5 on interstate. Trip computer says average speed of 70 mph; fuel consumption 47 mpg. Not bad! Notes: a/c on but outside temp under 70 f. lights on (rainly day) new Prius (only second tank)
My Prius IV with Nav is one week old. Took it out this weekend on two road trips. Went from Largo, Florida up to Tarpon Springs and back (round trip 50 miles). Averaged 52 MPG. Next day drove it south to Myakka State Park and back (round trip 110 miles). Highway driving at 65-70 miles per hour. Averaged 51 MPG. I am impressed.
no break in period for me. first tank was near 60 mpg. will say that AC, especially on short trips at street speeds definitely impacts mileage. not nearly as much a difference on the freeway. we went to Seattle twice, both times temps in the 90's, freeway mileage around 57 mpg. (i drive pretty conservatively, rarely go over 65 mph and that is only on the downhill stretches) i would check the usual, tire pressures, oil fill level, etc. you didnt say what mode you drive in... try ECO, it does not change the power of the car, only the pedal response. its also supposed to adjust level of AC, but you can override that by simply adjusting temp and fan speeds.
This tank is going quite well but I have a decision to make. I'm 17 miles from an 800 mile tank, gas gauge started blinking 26 miles ago, the DTE went to 0 some 8 miles ago. Do I go for it, my commute home will do it, or do I fill up. Wayne
Wayne, based on bobwilson4web's tests, you should be good for the 17. Me, I'd fill up because a) I'm chicken, and b) the 800 means little to me.
So far, it looks like there is 2.1 gallons in the tank of my Prius when it starts to 'flash.' Note, when you finally run out of gas, there is no external indication as it smoothly transitions to battery and drains it down. Then you suddenly find you're in a inertial vehicle and the "power steering" fault shows up. ... Not a good place to be. Now if you are keeping your speed above 46 mph, the battery should remain mostly charged and you can 'catch it' by seeing the battery level begin to drop ... somewhat quickly at high speed. Still, you have what is left in the battery to find a safe place to park. ... Uh, you do carry a spare, 1 gal. can of gas, right? ... Bob Wilson
A spare gallon of gas, it's bad enough for me to remember the camera. But I did this time. So the commute home I worked it the best I could for traffic. And then the tank. Filled with 12.075 gallons. Math says 66.28 MPG. This was 180 miles of Interstate coming home from Hybridfest and 620.3 miles of city street driving. Wayne
I just got my Prius II on Saturday. It had 117 miles on it with a fuel usage of 44.1 mpg and the dealer "full" tank. On Sunday night I reset the trip ODO, put it into ECO mode, and headed to work (~29 miles mixed driving) For the first 5-10 miles, the min meter was all over the place - the driving is very mixed, and the avg was ~45 mpg. I reached the expressway (65 for a few miles, then 55 for the rest), the avg began to climb. By the time I reached the last few miles on city streets and company roads, I was up to 59.1 mpg. The last few miles were under 30 and mostly run without the ICE. By the time I reached my parking spot, I hit 61.6 mpg. Coming home and a few errands last night brought the average down to 57 and then back up to 60.0. (avg speed 40mph) I drove it mostly as I had my Jeep, steady starts, lift off the gas when a light, stopsign or traffic indicates a stop or slow down ahead, and going within 5 mph of the speed limit. Twice on the expressway, I noticed a creep into the red and if I didn't need it for getting out of someone's way, I eased off slightly. I figure I've used ~1 2/3 gallons for my first 100 miles (tho the gauge is down 3 pips which would be ~3 gallons if the tank is 10, or is that too literal? ). Would have used just over 5 in the Jeep... If this is the "break in" period, I really look forward to seeing what I get once it's all settled in! Robbin
Greetings 38 mile trip - Eastern PA hill country - 69.4 out, 72.0 back - ave 38 mph driving back roads. I get 42-44 on same trip, same driving care with a 1998 Corolla 5 speed.
1st tank (my fill-up), 45.7 computer, 43.4 calculated, around 425 miles or so driven (I'm doing this from the top of my head)
In a recent trip to Los Angeles from Sunnyvale, CA with my brand new 2010 Prius IV covering 770 miles, I got 53.8 mpg and was traveling about 67-69 MPH. I now have about 1100 miles on my Prius. Does anyone else experience the vehicle not tracking straight and must apply some steering pressure to the right and then to the left the entire time you are driving to keep it tracking on the freeways and highways??
I am a new owner (under 1,000 miles) and my last tank was for two weeks, 270 miles. I got 47.89 MPG measured (versus 50.7 on the gauge, which always seems to be around 5% high compared to actual fuel burned). My longest trip in the last tank was 30 miles, most mileage was accumulated in 10 mile and under trips. City surface street/freeway was probably 50/50. Roads in my area are quite level. I run the a/c 24/7 and let it blast at its coldest settings. It was in the 110's here and I would rather be comfortable than get 1-2 MPG more. I do not use EV or ECO modes (or even the Power mode). I turn them off, to me it is a distraction. I keep up with traffic, use no "hyper" techniques. This mileage is about 4 MPG better than I got with my 2003 Jetta TDI diesel, 5-speed manual transmission.
Went on vacation from Seaside Oregon to Walowa Lake and several side trips during our stay, Joseph and Imnaha Oregon. Total car weight was 3,800 lbs shown on Oregon DOT truck scales. Me, my wife, and our son with several bags of gear. Went via 84 East and from Lagrande Oregon to Joseph, Oregon. Total miles, 1,500. Miles per gallon 48.8 MPG, by miles driven and fuel used, reading on MFD was 52.0 MPG. Mostly 98% highway driving at speed from 55 - 70+ MPH. EPA is rated 48 MPG (Highway). So we did better than the EPA fully loaded at real world driving speeds and conditions, and 75 % of the time with the AC on. We would have achieved 50 MPG but on our way back via 84 West we were facing a headwind, 25-35 MPH, from Pendelton to nearly Troutdale Oregon, about 150 miles. That segment really dropped are MPG. Quite Satisifed with our Prius purchase. Hard to believe we got all that gear inside our car. But we did and the ride was very comfortable. alfon
I am finally getting around to posting my first two fill-ups. I went on a weekend road trip from Syracuse NY to RI and back and filled up my car twice. Fill-up #1: after 200+ miles in-town and the rest highways (including the hilly Berkshires through MA) 436.8 mi, 48.4MPG MFD, 46.9 at the pump. This was on the free dealer-filled tank. Fill-up #2: Mostly highway miles, including the hilly Berkshires. 474 mi, 51.6 MPG MFD, 51.09 MPG at the pump I wasn't "hyper" about hypermiling and I used the AC only occasionally. I am very happy with the mileage so far! I am still working on tank #3 and am finding that my mileage is hovering in the 47MPG range for mostly around town. I do live in a hilly area and I had the car undercoated to combat the salty roads in the winter here, so I suspect my mileage may not hit 50MPG around town until I improve my hypermiling skills. LOVE this car!
First tank was dealer fill up. 2 1/2 weeks, 605 miles , put in 10.795 g, MFD said 56.3, calculated was 56. Good for first tank, will try for > 60 with 2nd!
After two tank fulls, I am getting around 42 MPG, based on my calculations after fill-up. I admit, I'm disappointed- I expected to get at least the sticker numbers. This is far better than my Odyssey, but now that I have a Prius, I'm greedy! This is my first hybrid car. Most of the trips I take are 5-10 miles, in the city- plenty of stops and starts, plenty of hills, and stops on hills! I've had the AC on at about 74 deg. (okay, I'm ready to increase that to 78) Is this just the result of some well known break in period, not well known to me? Should I have the ECO button pressed in at all times? I just try to keep the car in the ECO range.... Thanks for your thoughts! Helen
We got our Prius Saturday night, we have about 277 miles on half a tank, but it has only been 3 days, so still learning and getting a feel for the car.
It's hard to get good gas mileage with the type of short trips you describe with stops and starts and hills (unless they are all down hill ). I have similar trips and conditions except that I don't turn the AC on unless I have to and then I usually set it at around 78 or even higher. I also like to have my sunroof open, which means probably that the AC has to work a little harder when it is on. So far I am getting around 46-47mpg on the short about-town trips, and around 51 for longer freeway trips (although on one longer trip I got 60 going and only 47 coming back). This is according to the trip display, not calculated. It will probably be lower when I fill it up. I kept complete records for my 2006 and calculated my MPG on every fill-up. It was usually a couple of mpg lower than the computer display, though not always. Sometimes it was higher. In the first couple of months I achieved very high mileage (in the 50s) because I took it on a couple of extended road trips. Then after that, my driving was mainly in the short-commute about-town range, and my average mileage dropped to mid 40s. In the winter, I wouldn't get more than high 30s at times. My lifetime average over 3 years was about 43.5 mpg. I don't think there really is a "break-in period" -- at least, my mileage didn't improve after 5000 on my old Prius. But I think it could take a several hundred or a couple of thousand miles for a new driver to get used to a different style of driving. So maybe it's the driver that needs breaking in, rather than the car.
