Just following up on this issue.

My sister was unable to work on the car for an extended period, but would start it to keep it from having more issues. Last month she received a recall notice for updated software on the inverter. She took it in and was informed that the inverter was replaced under warranty for the prior owner BUT the firmware was not updated at that time for some reason. They did the update and all signs are that this problem is resolved. Time will tell, but it runs like it is supposed to for the first time in years.

We got a letter from Toyota Canada, inverter related, titled "March 2014 SOSH-230-1A". Problem was identified in part as "Certain transistors could be damaged when operating the vehicle uner high-load driving conditions". Also says "Toyota dealer will perform a software update to the Motor/Generator ECU and Power Management ECU...".

We brought it in for this, and post-visit noticed some slight differences in the car's behaviour, noticeably a slight increase in propensity to shut off the engine, which seemed positive.

It was @ChapmanF I think, who noted there was a confusing step in the instruction the service department was following, which if misunderstood might have resulted in a botched update.

Maybe something like that happened in your case.

That was a story from the E0E recall (also the F0R recall for Prius v), where about 36,000 cars that were taken in for that recall only received one of the two firmware updates the recall was supposed to entail. The story was here.
