Guess what there's a video that test drives the Camry Hybrid against other cars. The Toyota Prius gets 1st place, the Volkwagen turbo diesel 2nd, and the CamryHybrid 3rd. Note that the Volkwagen turbo diesel is a manual transmission and has only 100 hp.

That is incorrect - the Camry in the video is a 4CYL conventional Camry, NOT a hybrid.

Oh really? Maybe you'd like to re-watch it. It's the 2006 Camry LE.

The Prius has 110hp and it did 1.6L/100km better.

Here's some more info from The Car Connection

Most notably, though, Toyota is offering the latest version of its Hybrid Synergy Drive system on the Camry, pairing it with a four-cylinder engine - a different, Atkinson-cycle, 147-hp version of the 2.4-liter-for an emphasis on fuel economy rather than all-out performance. Combined with the electric motor system, the front-wheel-drive powertrain delivers up to 192 hp. The Hybrid carries a PZEV emissions rating. EPA fuel economy for the Camry Hybrid will be 43 city, 37 highway, with performance predicted to be a bit better than the four and V-6 and an official range of over 700 miles from its 17.1-gallon fuel tank.

While Camry Hybrids are packaged much the same way as the other models - the evidence of some good engineering work to find places for the bulky elements like the hybrid transaxle, inverter, and battery-they get a slightly different appearance, including blue-tinted headlight reflectors, LED taillamps, and a matte-chrome grille in front that flows into the fascia.

Especially of note is the way in which Toyota plans to market the Hybrid - more like a powertrain option than as an entirely different model. Even more surprising is that the hybrid likely won't be the most expensive Camry in the lineup - though demand at dealerships might drive premiums. Initial marketing plans call for the Hybrid to slot in below a loaded V-6. According to insiders, Toyota plans to treat the hybrid system as a premium powertrain option, a step up from the four-cylinder, but appealing to different customer priorities than the V-6.

The 2006 Camry is a regular 4cyl, not a hybrid. Just watched that video yesterday.

As Evan mentioned a key factor is familiarity. The Prius serves, served?, its purpose 'to go before', to act as a prophet, and to attract an influential market segment to the benefits of Hybrid technology. To do so it had to be unique in many ways including styling. Uniqueness of styling however precludes much of the market which is much more comfortable with traditional looks. Business attire has changed how much in 100+ years?

Putting the HSD into the most comfortable, meaning accessible, vehicle on the road now is step 4 of a well-thought-out strategy. Noone will be able to say 'Nahh, it's too weird-looking.'

At only 45000 units annually the sales goal is not too lofty. It will account for only ~10% of total camry sales. Camry shoppers have great choices in a wonderfully styled vehicle.

I dont think so John. The Big 3  of Hybrids, 'Yota, Honda and Ford will likely expire their 60K unit limit this year. If the Altima ( this year also ) is a Gen behind the Camry it likely will still sell well. GM with all it's mild offerings may expire it's 60K limit sometime next year just on sheer volume. In any event it's all good :D for us.

ha. If you pay for my Camry. :D

Anyway. I think I'll go with Prius since CH might not come out until June or later. Hybrid tax credit probably will be cut in half by that time frame. I better get that 3k instead of 1k or less(my guess) for the CH.

Then in 2 yrs, I'll get a large car/van w/ newly designed battery pack that has less weight and more power.

I like the new CH. I think they are going to sell like hotcakes. It seems like toyota's marketing strategy for hybrids is right on target. The prius is for those who want to make a statement, get excellent gas mileage, yet is a little more practical than the insight. The highlander adds a 4wd suv. The camry is the top selling car in america, and the hybrid allows people in the market for a fuel effient car to consider buying a camry. I think camry hybrid has the potential to outsell prius. So when does the hybrid minivan come out?

"Eco" is not name of technology, just name of the mode. Camry Hybrid still have full electric AC system. Eco reffers only to the logic of the unit to spend less gas.

p.s. like Lexus hybrids, Camry Hybrid will have a lot of standard features such as smart entry, bluetooth, 440W premium sound system with mp3 and 6cd's, dual zone air, 9 airbags, vdim, 16" alloys... which means it will not be that cheap.

    -----------------

Wow. I was just reading Camry hybrid specs - it is actually a lot more powerful than Prius. It has 140HP electric engine, system voltage of 650v (vs 500v in Prius),

45hp is "battery" output, which is actually 25hp in Prius. Wow.

    This thing will be fast!

VDIM.. that means it'll have active steering too eh? Also, if you read the article on The Car Connection's website, the Camry Hybrid is poised to be positioned as a premium powertrain offering however, it's not expected to be the most expensive Camry. Also, it's 8 airbags, not 9 (dual front, dual front side, side curtains and dual front knee airbags)

well, you are right, it has 8 airbags, or by lexus counting 10. Last year, we used to count 2nd row side courtain as separate airbag, hence it would be 10 (like in Lexus).

Considering how many standard features there are in Camry Hybrid, I wonder if it will be priced almost to the Accord Hybrid levels.

With so much more horse power and more standard features, in bigger car, it will have to be more expensive than Prius... maybe start at 26-27k?
