Never mind -- somehow I posted to the wrong thread. I blame El Patron.

    El Patron twists the truth.

^^^I think I know what Steve is saying but it belongs to a different thread.

Back to the refurb battery thread:
    • Would be interesting to get Lucious Garage take on it
    • Funny they say fits one kind of 2006 not another...hmm hope I got the good 2006 HV battery
    • May be why we are hearing less Goodwill on new batts?
    • Not sure yet about Lew's promotion, I'd say if he had part of the elephant
    • AK did pretty good $1700? No I'd say that was a free replacement last year, unless we are missing something in the car history. If AK had Toyota loyalty (new car) it's inexplicable compared the generousity we've been hearing prior to 2016.

no doubt. but if you put gen 3 cells in a new case, everything inside new, would you call it new?

Day repair+1: Car's running great and I'm in love with my Prius again! :D

Here are the photos you requested (as EricBecky said: only two 10mm bolts and very easy to reveal) ...

Can we stop arguing and move on now?

BTW: I would still like to get confirmation about exactly how Toyota remanufactures Prius batteries. While I've been assured it contains new cells, most of the Toyota folks I spoke with seemed to still be learning about both rebuild process and warranty, and I haven't seen anything in writing. o_O

No need to argue, but I was expecting black color.
I really need to go back and re-read this from Post 35. Very confusing.

    AK are you orig owner?

We could ask PriusTeam for help but lately not hearing much I did leave a PM while back

Yes, original owner and a long-time Prius advocate and Priuschat poster (though I can't seem to remember my old username (n))
Oh, and of course the service guys didn't say anything about my self-installed EV button!

It would be even better if you can open the battery case and take a picture of the 28 modules. This will put to rest whether they rebuild the battery with all new modules and bus bar or simply replace the failed modules.

True, but not much incentive from my perspective, and avoiding opening up the car and battery was the whole idea behind having the dealer do it. :p
I'll stand by until Toyota answers the question in writing, or somebody else confirms.

I would love to talk to a tech at the dealer.
Hmmm... maybe I'll have to make a call.

The batteries I receive from Toyota come partially assembled. Many parts need to be transferred over from the original battery.
They are not ready to drop in. There is additional assembly required.

I'm curious if this "-84" battery comes fully assembled?

It still could have all new cells in it.
If/when I get one I'll be sure to open it up and snap some shots of the modules.

The warranty return policy has the technician check the date codes on modules.
So I assume the "-84" batteries must match the same pattern for warranty return inspections.
    Interesting.

Ah very industrious of you...popular back then, it was. Do you feel that button shortens Gen2 batt life?
Would you be willing to talk to Luscious Garage to compare notes?
They have email address on their web page. I started to send an email last nite, but decided I did not know enough about it.
    • Do they also get partial assembled batteries like you do?
    • Are they aware of the new reman batts?
    • Why would some 2006 batts be different than others?
    • etc.
Looks like LG may need to update their battery replacement tutorial discussion

Back in 2006-2007 there was considerable discussion about the effect of DIY Gen 2 EV button install on both warranty and battery life. My position is similar to many posters at the time - no impact on either.

As many folks know, the computer controls which monitor and safeguard the battery in EV mode are already present and functional in the Gen 2 models. The EV function was simply not enabled on U.S. delivery vehicles, so many of us "enabled" it after the fact by taking a single pin connector to ground through a momentary contact switch. It is handy and I use it mainly for jockeying around the driveway or changing parking places, never for driving any distance. Occasionally I'd forget to turn it off, but computer would automatically kick on the ICE at speed or as soon as battery SOC dropped to purple bars, which is no different than what happens if you run accessories like A/C while at rest. Newer Prius models come with EV button standard and same battery warranty which further supports claim of no impact on battery life.

If anything it was luck-o-the-draw, or heat was a culprit for reduced battery life in my case. The car is in Southern California and I suspect being parked outside in summer months with the windows up may have created prolonged interior temperatures sufficient to degrade battery life. This is probably another good reason for Prius owners in warmer climes to crack the windows open during peak summer months. I wonder if the moon-roof equipped Prius with solar fan (do they still offer this?) would provide a cooler environment and possibly extend battery life? (n)

I already have a connection with Luscious but have not received any info back from them.

I did talk to my dealer and confirmed there are some of these available, but only in California distribution location.
I could order one if I really wanted to, but I do not see a reason for now.

Still unclear of what's inside and whether it comes fully assembled?
Time and experience will show the truth.
Price was similar to existing pricing for other HV batteries.

Seems like there's no reason Toyota will need to provide a new replacement battery for warranty repairs now, they can just put in a refurbished battery.

Technically I suppose you might consider their replacements up to now as refurbished.
    New cells.
But old electronics, as well as other odds and ends from the old battery pack.

    So my questions still remain
    Are the cells new?
    Does it come assembled?
I'll see what I can find out tomorrow.

Was too busy doing this today...

Ok. So in an attempt to get more specifics on the remanufactured hybrid battery in writing, I submitted an inquiry to Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. (TMS) through their website (Ask Toyota <[email protected]).

    My initial inquiry:
"Can you describe exactly which components are new and which are used or reused in remanufactured Prius hybrid battery part #G951047031-84? I would also like to know the warranty, as someone at Toyota told me it is 3years/unlimited mileage."

The next business day I received the following email response:
"Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.. So we may effectively address your inquiry,... ...please reply with your VIN and your current address and telephone number, so we may conduct additional research."

    I replied by email with:
"My question was actually intended as a general question not vehicle specific. However ... ... here is my vehicle Vin number:"

    They responded by email with:
"Our records indicate you were able to communicate your inquiry via our Customer Experience Center telephone line on [date omitted] and Toyota advised you that there is a three year unlimited mileage warranty on the remanufactured hybrid battery and that all the cells are replaced."

While TMS certainly provided prompt replies, I can't say the above email exchange was entirely satisfying, a bit like pulling teeth and didn't really answer initial question, but so far the most I've been able to get from Toyota in writing. Hopefully future inquiries will produce more detailed results regarding construction, reuse, availability, etc..

Note: Some superfluous text in above exchanges has been deleted for brevity.
