Wow, that got the discussion going. Can some you you take a picture of the actual connector on both the MFD and Nav ECU. Also does anyone know who makes the nav ECU? They may have other products using this interface. Finally, does anyone know who is the OEM for the MFD panel? Is it Sony? Are there any markings on the MFD internals that can give us hints?

From what I've read, the GVIF interface does well in electrically noisy environments when you the distance from the video source and display is large.

I really like the idea of building our own converter, now we just need to find electronics expertise to do so...

So is it 2 wires combined into 1 or is it 2 pins and 2 wires. I thought the Prius schmatic only showed the 1 wire going to 1 pin on the mfd.

The schmetic I saw had only a single wire. I'll take a look tonight to see if there is a 2 wire connector on there as well.

Yes two wires pos and neg. I have a pic on my camera but it is at home.

Here is one more clue.

Sony Corporation proposes a third type, called GVIF. GVIF stands for Gigabit Video InterFace. This interface concept is targeted at single cable, differential connection for simplicity in distribution of high speed moving images. Sony's examples of its implementation include long run connection (about 20 m) in aircraft entertainment systems, to mention one. The interface is implemented with a single LSI chip transmitter and LSI receiver. It does require a twin axial style cable connection. Because this interface method carries all RGB video, sync, and clock information embedded into one connection, it must run at about 1.5 gigabits per second to support XGA graphics. It's bent toward moving images and its simpler connection could make it a good choice for many systems, particularly where it can be married to fiber optic transmission.

It looks like we (or at least I ) are dealing with two things at the same time here.

1 A GVIF transmitter in the NAV and a GVIF receiver in the MFD

2 Transmission of that signal through wires

I have found GVIF cables now known under DVI HD 15. That is were the confusion comes in. Those cables carry Sound, video, sink, and power to a GVIF monitor. The nav seems to take these and sends them down different wires. One for video, some for power, and some for sound.

Not to be mistaken the signal must still be GVIF, only it gets to the MFD via a single (two strand) Sky Blue wire.

According to the PDFs The Force provided the GVIF only combines RGB and not sound so that is why the GVIF makes it to the MDF in only one two strand wire.

So if we were to patch in a computer that could send in DVI-I or DVI-D we should be able to patch right in to the MFD and have it as our display.

Now we just need to find a computer that has a GVIF transmitter, most likely made by Sony.

Wont work as far as I know because no matter the DVI-* connector style, DVI on video cards will only transmit TMDS.

I did some more research on the NAV ECU and this is what I found.

Connector A has a 24 pin connector.
1 - +B – Battery Power
4 – SPD – Speed Signal
8 – VOI- - Audio Out Negative ( Voice guidance )
9 – VOI+ - Audio Out Positive ( Voice guidance )
13 – AAC – ACC Power
14 – GND1 - Ground
18 – TX- -AVC LAN Communication Signal ( Touch Position, and BT data, ect... )
19 – TX+ - AVC LAN Communication Signal ( Touch Position, and BT data, ect... )
20 – REV – Reverse Signal

Connector B has a 8 pin connector
3 – MIC+ - Microphone Positive
5 - MIC- - Microphone Negative
7 – SLD1 – Audio Shield

Connector C has a 1 pin connector
1 – GVIF – Digital Video Out

Connector C has 1 pin and 1 wire. Pure 1 wire GVIF high res digital video. None of the other wires have anything to do with the video.

I checked out my broken LCD and it does not have what we need. I did find out that the CC light transformer board caught fire and thats why it did not work. At least I can turn it into a high res cinema projector. :D

Gentlemen, I may have found what you need. Here's a slimline monitor Sony put out in 2000 which features an external hookup box that takes in VGA (and possibly others, I can't find enough info to be sure) and sends GVIF to the monitor. In this manner, the monitor itself is super thin. Seems you could get one, use the box and ditch the monitor... Here's a few on eBay that are dirt cheap. Let us know if you pick one up and find it works! :)

eBay Listing 2...

EDIT: I found an old review for this monitor and it had this to say:

Yes, I was already planning to buy one of these and see if it works. If it does, I'll post the results here. Any of the LCDs in the SDM line from Sony would be the same if it works. So that will be a great source and Sony is still making LCDs that are not for sale to the general public that we may be able to get our hands on.

There are two chips for this process a transmitter chip and a receiver chip. What we need are transmitter chips or items that have them in them such as the Nav unit, these Sony LCD's and, the units that feed the aircraft LCD units. There may even be one in each seat on the aircrafts from around the world so there is really a big supply out there of inexpensive used items.

I'll let you know if it works or if it doesn’t I’ll just be out 50 buck instead of all of us.

Doh, I see (now) you did make mention of the "Sony SDM-N80 Multiscan computer display" in one of your earlier posts... Different model, but same general thing I guess. As for the aircraft seats, those would likely have only the receiver chip, not the transmitter -- no? The head units are probably more scarce. Hmm, MythBusters once made reference to a used aircraft supply depot in Sacramento here that has "everything", I wonder if I could find something there...

I've been following this thread, but I don't recall seeing -- did you guys every figure out if all the 06 MFDs have this input or just the packages that come with NAV? I'm sure they do, but are the hookups there? Color me intrigued...

Darelldd has done a really good job of documenting his Prius mods, lots of high quality pictures. Thanks Darelldd... If you look at his anytime reverse cam mod half-way down the page he's got a picture of the back of the MFD and our SkyBlue connector :D. He has a package 6 no NAV.

http://www.evnut.com/images/prius/mfd_video/mfd_rear.jpg

I'm going to remove the center speaker on my wifes package 5, to see if I can confirm that the connector is there as well, but I'm guessing that it probably is too... <grin> What I really want to see though is what is to the left of the connector. It looks like there many be switches there.

The other thing that I've read was that the NAV system for some Toyota cars is made by "Fujitsu Ten" which is somehow related to Toyota (partially owned maybe?) Well sure enough, the back of the MFD label (under TOYOTA) has a Fujitsu Ten label and what looks like a part number next to it... So... now we have a video interface and we know the OEM for the 06 MFD. B)

Ok you have the same MFD as I do so it would have the GVIF reciver built in it. (That is my guess) You don't have nav so you don't have the GVIF transmiter. I am guessing this should work for you as well as we are looking for the transmiters. However we are not sure this will work yet.

Here's the back of my MFD as viewed through the center speaker opening. The blue connector is present as expected. To the left of the connector what I though may be jumpers or switches turned out to be unused solder pads. The label on my MFD is a little different than Darelldds. The part numbers are different too.

Data from the FCC id can be found here

The FCC registration is for the bluetooth module, however there are pictures of the MFD on the site.

One thing I'm a little unclear on is how do non-nav owners we switch between video modes (prius display to GVIF) if we get this to work.

I do have a Map button on my steering wheel that does nothing right now. Perhaps that would toggle to that input, were it present...

I've got one new piece of info to add. I found a reference describing enhancements to the nav system for 2006. One of the lines states:

"The display color is made up from 32,000 colors..."

The 32,000 colors is probably rounded down from 32768 which is 15 bit color... This isn't an entirely unheard of color depth but its not standard on most video interfaces.

Coming from Prius CAN Monitor thread...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(momanz @ Nov 7 2006, 11:55 PM) </div>
It looks it'll be used from a GVIF signal to NEC 800 X 600 LCD display.
I think you need opposite interface, something like...
[CAN-View or equiv] -(analog RGB)-> [GVIF conversion] -(GVIF)-> [2006+ MFD]

Anyway, the 2006+ MFD screen size seems 800 X 480 pixels.
