2006 iTech, let the mods / upgrading commence

    The balance boards are not turning on till the cell reaches 3.61v, but then they drag the cell down to anywhere between 3.55v and 3.41v as there seems to be quite a bit of variation between the boards.
    I might lean of one of the members of the local AEVA and see if he will sell me one of the BMS systems he made for his PHEV Prius. It has a slow ramp up for the charging current while watching the cells voltages and then a slow ramp down as the cell voltages approach the target voltage. Balancing is via a voltage booster on each board charging that cell and the next 2 cells in either direction depending on which have the lower voltage. Very pretty light display too and all connected via optic fibre :lol: I'll see if it can work with the 20 amp charger as well as the 5 amp charger I already have with the vehicle.

    That’s pretty much exactly what happens with the pack in the car.
    I have never had a HVD event. The charger would always terminate charge based on the full pack voltage.
    When I checked (granted not super often) the lights were coming on relatively close together too.

    With the balance boards pulling the cells down to different voltages it actually drags the pack out of balance rather than balancing it. I'm looking at removing all the boards and see if that stops the boiling electrolyte smell as they do get the negative terminal of each cell quite warm/hot and I don't think the little GBS cells appreciate it too much.

    Been a long while since I posted anything on this thread. Sadly, I lost all the traction battery modules I'd rehydrated and assembled along with the extended range battery pack, all the gear that controlled the linking between the extended range pack and the traction battery, all the rear side panels and the leather rear seat swab, all up stairs in the workshop when it burnt to the ground.
    I've fitted a new from Toyota traction battery, plated the hole I cut in the floor to build the ill fated LTO battery pack that never actually ever powered anything, that was lost in the fire as well, and the Silver Prius goes great again, that improved handling with all the bracing really puts it in a different world to the '08 ex taxi Prius the wife drives.
    Next project is to torture test 5 x 15 ah sodium ion cells (equals 2 modules) to see if they can handle life as a traction battery upgrade, 6 ah on a really good day from the NiMh up to 15 ah, all day every day from the sodium ion cells .... and they should fit in the same spot the original traction battery lives .....
