2004 Prius Error Code Help!

    Hmm, alright, I assume the $15 subscription would be enough for this particular case?

    Also, can you elaborate more on what you mean by "hacked Mini VCI"? I was able to reset the Immobilizer completely (which erased the two smart keys that were programed to the car). Just wanted to make sure :)

    Well, if you were able to reset the immobilizer ECU that is a start. Hopefully if you have the procedure from techinfo then you can get the two fobs to be recognized.

    Yes, $15 for two business days will be sufficient.

    This is the same guide that I have been following, this is where I came under the assumption that I am 80% sure the problem has something to do with the Certification ECU, though, not sure what the problem is, whether wiring, or the actual ECU going bad.

    Would subscribing to TIS provide me more in depth look into the issue over the manual?

    Just wanted to share, I paid the $15 and subscribed to TIS for a two day account.

    Their manual is very identical to the one that I had found online regarding the B2775 error code, my end result is that I need to change (or fix) the Smart ECU.

    EDIT: So... I for some reason am having a hard time finding more resources on the Smart ECU, specifically what the part is, how to access it and what to look for, I'd love to check this out today

    I believe the Smart ECU is near the steering wheel column and that the black plastic panel above the steering column must be removed for access. Look for the repair manual instructions about how to disassemble the instrument panel area. Also look in the electrical wiring diagram manual for a drawing that shows the various ECUs behind the instrument panel.

    For part numbering information, try toyodiy.com or one of the websites of the Toyota dealers that sell parts at discounted pricing over the web, such as AutoNation Toyota Gulf Freeway (Houston, TX).

    So I think this might be the part: Toyota Prius Hybrid Smart Key Control Module 89990 47020 | eBay

    I am assuming that must be the Smart ECU? I obviously don't know what it looks like, but apparently it is indeed $800+ part (if purchasing from Toyota Dealership), but I am obviously looking for the cheapest solution that works.

    In general I would agree it is a good idea to purchase a used ECU since the prices are very low (due to low failure rates and consequent low demand.) The price of the unit on eBay is so low as to make that an easy choice. I suggest you may want to open up the dashboard in your car to find the ECU and make sure the part number of the replacement unit is correct.

    That sounds good, I am glad this is literally only $20 versus $750 the dealer was asking for. I will probably start educating myself on the disassembly of the front of the car before I start doing anything, and give it a look before I shoot the trigger to go out and buy one.

    I am learning a lot along the way to diagnosing this car, and just in general how the hybrid system works in full detail!

    So just an update here:

    I took apart of assembly and was able to find the Smart Key ECU. I plugged it out, took a look, and gosh it looks brand new, the connectors to the wire look perfectly fine, no idea what the problem could be. I went ahead and put the ECU back in place, connected it, and started up the car (some of the assembly was left out, like the airbags, screen and so on). The B2775 Error Code did not show up, so I assumed maybe it just wasn't plugged in properly or something. I tried to reprogram the car but it kept says communication with the Transponder ECU wasn't working. I ended up resetting the Immobilizer Code, and boom B2775 returns, so I am assuming that this part is faulty.

    I had my uncle with me who helped disassemble the front assembly as he was familiar with it (he installed custom stereo on his own Prius), and he said sometimes, when we plug things out and plug them back in, it takes a while for it to appear, not sure how accurate that is...

    Anywho, I am ordering the Smart Key ECU, it is only $20, hopefully this does the trick!

    Just an update here:

    So I ordered the Certification ECU/Smart Key ECU, I opened up the entire from assembly of the car, replaced the ECU, reprogrammed the Immobilizer, than both smart keys, and BOOM, it works!

    Both smart keys unlock and lock the doors, start the car keyless! To hell with the Toyota Stealership, the estimated $1700 price quote they gave me for first diagnosing the problem, replacing the part, and price of the part. All this required me is $15 for the Techinfo Account and $30 for the ECU, and a few hours to open up the car and understand how the entire Hybrid system works.

    Since this is a unique issue, I'll leave it to as it is, if anyone in the future runs into this issue, I can gladly help!

    Darkgiant, how did you "reprogrammed the immobilizer, then both smart keys" ? What was the exact procedure ? Is this that simple procedure shown below ? Did you need a code/pin/token or something like that (if yes, how did you get it) ?
