2003 prius squealing. Stops with brake pedal

    The rear adjusters are of a design that kind of depends on regular use of the parking brake, alternating with use of the regular service brakes. One use of the parking brake is able to 'cock' the adjust lever onto the next higher tooth of the starwheel; the next use of the service brake spreads the shoes apart, freeing the strut from the return-spring pressure so the adjust lever can move back downward and turn the starwheel.

    Some drivers hardly ever use the parking brake, making it difficult for the adjuster to keep up.

    Thats good to know...as i hardly ever use my parking brake. Kind of funny because i am required to use it at work,especially on mine sites. Fwiw,the third part prius had its adjusters on the front or outside of the shoes!
    User error admitted!
