2000w Inverter Install

    I'll have to ask my installer, but I'm guessing they sized the fuse to the inverter. I bought the inverter on my own and brought it to them, and asked them to install wiring to it. So I'm guessing the 300 amp fuse matches the inverter. Depending on what my installer says, and what the inverter company says when I call them, I'm likely to have it swapped for a 90 amp fuse (based on what folks have said in this thread).

    Nice job, excellent posts, TY Please don’t take this as a criticism but I wouldn’t want anything close to even 50- 100 Amperes running thru the 12 Volt battery, the inverter or my house. To insure this, when I tested my 1000 KW inverter for a possible electric grid failure I always had in mind to put only minimum loads on the car, inverter, 12V battery and probably shutting off at night. Basically this would give min usage of TV, refrigerator. lighting, and computer charge. You may have the same thing in mind. Incidently,, the Prius only requires milliamps from the 12V to go into Ready, so why even 100 Amp fuse. Perhaps in case of voltage surges.....
    anyway I presume the Toyota EEs know better than I.

    The possibility of too much current conducting can exist and cause a fire by continuous short circuit, the thicker cables insure longer and better short circuitry as well as the higher than battery designed 12 Volt fuse. (100Amp ) Higher fuses don’t give better protection, lower fuses do. The rule was when I was in the field, if you don’t have the right size fuse, go to a lower one.

    Since both the inverter and 12 V are fused at the design levels you may not need that 300 Amp at all.

    I don’t get what this is used for.. I read it all but I’m confused.. can you simple it down in one sentence for me what it does :oops:

    Thanks for the input. I appreciate it and you can rest assured am going to look into it fully. I originally only wanted a 1000w pure sine wave inverter, but I couldn't find one online that had an ETL or UL listing, and that's very important to me. I hadn't thought much about what load I'd put on the inverter. It would probably only be a refrigerator, computer and TV.

    The installer did say that fuse would probably never come into play. I was surprised when I saw it was 300 amps. I'm going to look into all of this thoroughly. One good thing is that I am the only person who will ever use this, and I'll never put much of a load on it. Still, I want to understand all of the ins and outs, and I want a reasonably-rated fuse there that would come into play at a reasonable point should that need ever arise.

    I'll use it very occasionally when the power goes out. I don't think I'd ever have more than a refrigerator, TV and computer plugged into it (maybe an LED lamp, too). I suppose I might use it camping, but, then again, I haven't gone camping since I was a kid (like 1984, so that isn't likely).

    You made a good decision with the pure sine wave, and nothing wrong with a 2000 KW inverter either. If not sure of load, buy a KWHr meter to measure AND before connecting to your house, Pull the main cicuit breaker, you don’t want utility power interfering with Prius Power.

    a number of people use their prius as a generator in a power outage, or for camping and the like.

    Oh, I'd never connect it to my house. I have some 10 and 12 awg extension cords. I do have a Kill-A-Watt meter.

    a lot of people do, and if you want to go all in, you can get inverters that run off of the hybrid battery, but it gets way more complicated.

    The way I understand it, you could use an inverter with any car. The problem is that to prevent the 12v battery from depleting, you'd have to leave your car running constantly. That would waste a lot of gas as the inverter would be using only a small fraction of the power generated by the burning of the gas.

    If I understand correctly, the Prius is particularly well-suited to running an inverter because, IF you leave your Prius in the "READY" mode, the hybrid battery will maintain the 12v battery, and, whenever the hybrid battery gets low, the Prius will automatically run the gas engine long enough to recharge the hybrid battery. What's great about that is that the gas engine doesn't have to run all the time, and, when it does run, it is a small, efficient engine and the electricity it generates is stored in the hybrid battery, meaning less waste. Maybe others can comment on this, but this is my understanding.

    Yes, they tested it at the shop, and I tested it here. I mean, I haven't run it for any amount of time, if that is what you're asking.

    You understand perfectly. Try connecting from the garage to the house, any outlet, 110 V of course.
    Main CB disconnected. When “they” tested your setup did they disconnect the main CB.
