Yeah, people don't believe me when I tell them it made it that far on the original pads. And the decision to wait that long wasn't me taking things too far - I had them checked regularly during oil changes by my shop and until about 175K, the shop always said they still had wear left.
Equally amazing is I'm still going strong on the 12V battery at 10 years+. I followed the onboard diagnostics method of checking the battery (as outlined in the newbie section here) and still shows good resting/charging voltage. I'll probably replace it soon, though, just so not to push my luck too far.
Since I posted back at #591 and read several brake-related comments, I finally had the brakes looked over at about 202000 miles - mechanic said they were both as thin as he's seen without making that noise that says you waited too long. He indicated no problems with struts and suggested waiting on replacing the plugs and water pump. So, like a previous post-er, I gave my Prius a "spa day" celebration with brakes, both cooling flushes, and the transaxle fluid. A week later - yesterday - the inverter cooling pump died. My little OBDII reader gave the code and a few Priuschat posts helped me confirm and rule out other problems - but I decided to have the shop replace it . But this forum and others gave me the insight to do it myself if I wanted to, maybe too much insight - one of the YouTube videos was complete with bloody knuckles! So, my wallet is a lighter but I think I'm good for another couple of years of commuting. .
Hi all, Currently just over 255k miles. Very slowly burning oil, slight leak in exhaust system, radio & CD changer no longer work, needs new struts. Otherwise, running great. No rust on body. 2004 Prius, purchased "certified used" from Toyota in 2007 with 48k miles 1) Did you replace the HV battery pack? As far as I know, I'm still on the original battery (bought "certified used" from Toyota in 2007.). 2) Did you replace the 12v lead-acid battery? Once 3) Did you replace the hybrid transaxle fluid? Once 4) Did you replace the brake pads? 3 times. Replaced rotors once. 5) Your lifetime MPG (if available)? Washington DC. Summer, 48mpg. Winter, 44mpg. 6) How often do you change your oil? What brand / product did you use? Not on time. Usually every 6k miles. High mileage synthetic 7) How about post a picture of 200,000 miles on ODO?
Can't take credit for the miles but I did contribute 500 of them since I got it more or less. SM-G935P ?
View attachment 139464 okay PC, Apr2017 I picked up this used 2005 brown prius at 245k miles, but now@ 252k. I did don't know.if the HVbattery is the original or not. The 12v battery was replaced ~Jan2017. Yes i replace LOADs : the hybrid ATF transaxle fluid, both engine& inverter antifreeze swap, brake pads, rotors and drums, 2brake cylinders, HV battery corrosion conditioned, new catalytic converter, new valve cover gasket, (advanced rubber corrosion) 2stabilizer links, driver control arm, stabilizer bar bushings, 4bearing hubs, 4 shocks, new tires when I picked it up at 245k. Current mpg is phenomenal @46mpg mixed city-hwy. I change oil at 3k intervals w/o various quality synthetic 5W-30 (ex. Lucas). Unfortunately its exhibiting advanced oil burning @~1LT/1500 miles. Good tune up w 4new irridium plugs, pcv. Plus several other non relevant items. Cruise is intermittently out, plan on swapping that. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
It is distinctly possible that you are not burning oil in the traditional sense (worn piston rings, internal engine seals, etc.). You likely have a gummed open PCV valve. You could go through the trouble of replacing it, but with poor oil drawback under your valve cover, it will likely just happen again in a few thousand miles.
I had to finally get new pads for my 2009 around 200k -- now at 270k. Other than recommended maintenance and replacements, I have done nothing to it except replace the 12V battery once. Now, though, we just found out that it was down to a quart of oil between 5k changes, and the catalytic converter is throwing a problem code. Is there anyone who would argue that I should get the work done on this one and keep it, or am I almost certainly to be better off selling this one and getting something new? What say you fine folks who have high mileage prii? Jack
1 quart per 5K miles is no problem. Just buy a quart of oil for $4 and add as needed. By the way, the distance between the two dipstick dimples amounts to 1.6 US quarts. You could replace the catalytic converter for a few hundred $s and continue to log miles on the odometer, or you could get a newer car. Up to you.
I agree....unfortunately I wasn't down a quart, I was down to a quart -- and so had burned ~3 quarts. My impression is that if it's burning that much oil between changes the repair is going to include an engine rebuild.....
Check your PCV. A Shortcut - check your PCV vacuum line and intake manifold (Just below/through your throttle body). If it looks like an oil sump, it’s your PCV/top end (poor oil drain back). iPhone ?
Finally replaced back brake pads at 260k. Did spark plugs and serpentine belt, also. At 265k the evaporator core went and had the dealer replace that. $1400. Now last Friday, at 269,789 miles the triangle came on. Too itmto the dealer and the Hybrid battery is reading as replace.
I have a little over 223K on my 07. I replaced the 12v battery a few thousand ago and also the front pads for the first time. I replaced the struts around 195K. Spark plugs changed once or twice. I change the oil every 5K with high mileage oil. I burn about 1 quart every 600 miles. This happened all at once pretty much although the oil got extremely low before I figured it out. I wonder if when I had the oil changed they forgot to put new oil in. Other than oil changes I take it every 30K for a check up. Other than the oil, absolutely no problems other than when the 12V died on me. I have replaced a few of the wear and tear items above and have NEVER needed an actual repair. I am considering buying a new car because most of my driving is in remote areas and I don;t want to be stranded when it finally dies on me. I am leaning toward another prius because of the reliability, and economy, but also would like something a little less spartan inside, and better handling on the curvy roads that I drive. I've heard the newer ones have less body sway to them. ?
After moving up from a Gen 2 to a Gen 4 there is no comparison, it will give you much better economy and the interior is anything but spartan and what a change in handling with the fully independent suspension. I take turns without toughing my brakes that with my old Prius I always braked because of body roll.
Thanks Padroo! Good to know, I might just head to the dealer for a try. Problem is I have to go a longer drive than the dealer will want to allow I think to find some curves...
i wonder if your shop messed up your waterpump while swapping out both engine/inverter coolants. Those are 2 unique tasks, with the inverter cooland requiring bleeding/burping knowledge not resident on regular petrol engines. I say this, as i have foulded up my 1st Prius while trying to initially experiment with both coolants... Im much the wiser now.
I just replaced my CAT with a cheaper option, which estimates lasting ~5years vice decade for the OEM. My Prius is now at 253k miles. Did the bulk of work myself less the weld, which only cost $20 down the street at a muffler shop. I think its worth the effort, as you now localized the problem and deduced that your Prius maintenance bills should be limited for the immediate time being. Good luck. 2005 CATALYTIC CONVERTER 250k Miles- Rid Codes P0420 catalytic converter & rear O2 sensor | PriusChat
Nice. My 2005 Prius is also experiencing a good amount of oil burning at 253k miles. Have you considered going a bit further on your tune-up and changing your PCV (~$6), throttle intake cleaning (due to gunk buildup), and engine filter(~$8)? Good luck.
