Upon reading back I realize I did replace the 12v battery at about 155k my bad. I'm burning oil now about a quart every 2500 miles. I've been using regular oil but I did Synthetic this time and put in Royal Purple. What's the consensus about the best way to stop the Prius from burning oil? 20170305_091607 by Skizza posted Mar 5, 2017 at 9:34 AM
You are most likely sucking oil through a gummed up PCV valve. Replacing it (a time consuming PITA) will stop the "burning" temporarily, but the root of the problem is poor oil drain back from the cylinder head. Flushes (Amsoil, Prestone & others) have bee of little help to me. IMHO, the old "Toyota sludge" of yore compounds the problem. iPhone ?
Just got my 2005 Prius with 229,000 on it and it has been running well for my first 1000 miles. We did the spark plugs a month ago and I'm fixing to do the oil next week. Mobile 1 synthetic mixed with regular has been the regime it has been used to for 150k, so I might keep that going. Previous owner did the battery pack a year ago and aux battery a month ago. I don't know about brake pads but I am going to check those too, along with the trans-axle fluid. I have been registering 45mpg. I have filled up 3 times so far but it seems that I can go only 400 miles on a tank. When I fill her up it only will take 8.__ gallons of fuel. I thought these held at least 10 and spec said 11. __? Is this normal? I do see the fuel economy pretty significantly drop when she is cold but definitely get better as she warms up. Any suggestions, anyone... for things to watch for or care I should be keeping up with? This is my first post on any forum, Thanks, Dann
My 2005 Prius turned over to 200,000 miles last weekend. We have only done maintenance ( oil, brakes, filters, wipers..) a new key fob and body work when it was rear ended. Now, it needs an inverter that will cost ~$5000. Should I do it or start looking for a new car?
In my opinion, you'd have to really love a car to spend $5000 on a repair bill when the car is 12 years old and has over 200,000 miles. I'd look for a different car.
Only part worth getting new is the traction battery pack. The rest, used parted out or rebuilt dirt cheap. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Hey all, I don't post much here, but thought I would contribute to the knowledge base since I use it. My 2006 Prius II just ran over 200K, so here is my data. 1) Did you replace the HV battery pack? Yes. I had mine done by then Re-Involt, now Taylor Automotive in Sanford NC. They are a big one in the US and just happen to be about 40 mins from my house. That was at 100K, I checked the voltage of all the cells last week using TechStream and they are going strong. 2) Did you replace the 12v lead-acid battery? Yes, several times. I think I am on my third. I don't like how this car eats these up. Converted to the Optima battery after the original died. On my second one of those. 3) Did you replace the hybrid transaxle fluid? Yes, but only just now at 200K. No issues to date. It was very dark, but didn't find any metal pieces. 4) Did you replace the brake pads? Yes, but they didn't need it. i bought them at 60K reflexively when doing my other car. Put them on a shelf until 120K, then just put them on even though they didn't need it. I did an inspection during my recent 200K 'spa day' of all the steering and drive train and didn't even think to look at them as I assume they will last the remainder of its life. 5) Your lifetime MPG (if available)? 47mpg is what I have always gotten regardless of my driving habits both highway and city. I hyper-miled it a little when it was new, but have just driven it since. 6) How often do you change your oil? What brand / product did you use? Maybe every 8-10,000. It is burning oil now so I need to be more vigilant on topping up. I don't do my own oil changes, so I just tell them to use the cheap stuff, not synthetic. I may end up doing the CarTalk thing and just topping up from now on, never changing it again since I assume the burning is blow-by as the rings age. 7) How about post a picture of 200,000 miles on ODO?[/QUOTE] Looks like everyone else's. In celebration of her milestone, I gave her a spa day: new serpentine belt, transaxle fluid, coolant and inverter fluid, PCV valve, spark plugs, finally replaced the mileage meter that went dead in cold weather, got a second key and programmed it, un-yellowed the headlights with wet/dry paper. I did all the work myself, so pretty cheap and plan to do some compounding and waxing as well as a detailing of the interior once it warms up. I took the console lid off and re-glued the fabric that had slipped out. I am making little micro-goals now to get more miles from her. I have committed to try to get 50k more. We will see after that. I feel like Kramer running the car out of gas at this point. It's all gravy from here.

Lol that's way too long between oil changes on regular oil. I'm surprised your engine didn't blow up. I use Synthetic on every 6k miles.
