200,000 Mile Club

Bought this car about a month ago. In that time, I have put 3K on her. Bringing the mileage 240332! Runs like a dream.
I have changed the oil but that is about it, so far. I can't find any history on her but seems to have been well maintained.

Of the many great high mileage threads, anyone know of a particularly good one?
So much information and so little gray matter, lol.

New here, hit 200k with my 05 Prius two weeks ago.

Batteries haven't been touched, brake pads replaced once, no issues outside of regular maintenance and the couple of recalls (water pump, floor mats, maybe something else).

 

Also a new hit - turned 200,000 recently. Similar results as kiipii. Neither battery touched as well here.

Although the end may be near with our tenure with what we have affectionately called "Olive". Catalytic converter is going and I think it's time for a change. Wish list has the HiHy on the top of the list. Realistically, might be leaning towards the new RAV4 Hybrid. But I have no intention whatsoever for the Gen 4 Prius. I can't even bring myself to look at the pictures anymore.

 

I have approximately 246k on my 2006 Prius. Have not changed the big battery and I do have to change the oil right after 5000 miles. I actually bought it from a dealer in MA and when I did I got free tires for life.

 

I got 50k miles to go, if i make it.. Check engine light, basically burning oil, replace the engine eventually.. oh well.

1. Do you have a code for your check engine light; 2. Your PCV valve is probably gunked open. (Mine is, again.). Have you replaced it, yet?

 

Man, The 22RE is a rock solid engine! I never had a chance to own a Toyota Pickup but, I am planning on getting one in the near future, I have owned an '89 Cressida, '85 Mr2, '89 Mr2, '96 Avalon, '96 Camry, and a '92 Tercel. '85 Toyota Motor home. (almost a pup) I did own an '85 Nissan 720 extra cab that I got for 100.00 from an old man. drove it for 8 years.

 

Thanks for this forum. I have a 2008 Gen 2 with 208,900 and am interested in what I can do to test the traction battery. It is original.
I found a test from '13 in posts proposing timing the drop from the 6th bar to the 5th bar on the MFD charge meter with everything off and the car in drive with parking brake on. I wonder if that is considered somewhat representative. So I timed the drop of each level until the ICE restarted and it lasted 17 minutes overall, 9 minutes from 6th to 5th.

Car info for the forum:
I drive about 100 miles daily, mostly all highway. The car is garaged nightly and under the sun in the Midwest daily. The dealer has changed oil every 5000 miles and it has been using about 2 qts every change for some time (no drips at all), which I'm told is not unusual. The transmission was changed at 140k and the dealer replaced a headlight ballast and bulb under warranty around 75k. Just had to change the catalytic converter to clear the check engine light.
Other than that, no problems whatsoever. In general our local dealer has treated me very well.

Is there any demand for a Prius with this age. What are the experiences around the forum?

 

I came here, because I am at 199k on my Prius Gen 2 and need some advice! I have a new hybrid battery, it was actually under warranty to 170k here in CA and I got it replaced at 169,300k at the Dealer! I know...what are the chances?! I was completely broke at the time and jobless, so the warranty was a Godsend. I have had to do other repairs since buying the vehicle at 140k but don't have a total of what I have spent, but I can figure that out if needed.

My question is this, my A/C compressor is gone, went out a few months ago, but since it was Winter, I didn't sweat it (literally) and since I am trying to save up to move out of my parents house, I didn't want to spend money to fix anything if not absolutely necessary. I have all my work done at my local Dealership, only because this is the most awesome Dealership in history and they always price match any mechanic/other Dealership in town. So there has never been a reason to go anyplace else.

So in addition to an A/C compressor, they said I may need a Catalytic Converter soon. So I went to my folks with this and they say I should not throw the money into my car anymore. it has 200k on it (almost) and I should buy something dependable for my child and myself. I am a single mom driving all over a lot and trying to save to move out. I don't have any extra money right now and the choice is either to throw in cash for repairs over the next few years or buy something newish and make monthly payments, and not be out the money from my savings up front.

What would you do if you were me? I need a DEPENDABLE car for the least amount of money. My parents will only let me get another Honda or Toyota if I get something else, I am leaning towards a Honda CRV, but they can run 20k easy.

HELP!

 

Your most awesome dealership in history should be able to look your car over and give you a pretty good idea of what it will need in the next 25-50kmi.

FWIW, my '07 @ ~240kmi is on its original AC compressor, CC and traction battery. I do go through wheel bearings more frequently than tires now, but I drive my Prius more like a kid in a WRX...

Thanks for reading my post, and the reply. I actually did take it to the Dealer to have a "once over" done and to project my major repairs for the next few years. That is when they told me about the Catalytic Converter. The only repairs he thinks I need are those two things, aside from mileage related maintenance. I was having a problem for a while with the Airflow Intake Valve...I think. I kept getting the triangle of death warning and all my lights would go on, and it was hard for them to find. It took three trips to the dealership before I got the fix it needed. But since then, everything has been good until the Compressor went out. So long story short, the car has had all the routine maintenance a loving Prius owner would give it, just faced with about 3k worth of fixes now, or buy a newer car. I am just in a really financially sensitive time, now have a job, but still working for a modest wage and looking for another job that pays better. So saving to move out is slow going. As I sit here tonight, I am leaning towards fixing my car, even though it will be 1-1.5k in repairs for the A/C and another chunk later for the CC, I am thinking even though it may take a chunk of cash now, I will save in the end. I have never had a monthly car payment, old school like that, I just save until I can afford things, so the thought of a car payment scares me. Yes, it would be nice to have a newer car and more peace of mind in repair costs...I may be putting moving out on a long term hold to be able to swing a $200-$300/month car payment, not to mention the tax, license, and down payment I do (if any). I think another Prius is going to go for the 200K club, in my possession. It is a good car, drives like a dream, albeit I would like a taller car for ease in and out. I can't complain that this car is truly a nice experience to drive so smooth and the radio I have to say has always impressed passengers in my car...good old factory radio is pretty awesome.

So am I making the right choice? Say with my Prius?

 

Hey out of curiosity, how do you know your catalytic converter is going bad? I have a bad A/C compressor right now and that is the other major repair my Dealership told me is on the horizon. He wasn't sure what would happen when it goes bad, in terms of...will it strand me? When you said, it is going bad, that makes me think you get a warning of some type?

 

All I had to do to know my traction battery was bad was go up a slight grade on the way to my house each day. If you go up a grade and you are pressing the pedal down and you feel your car "race" w/o a response to accelerate, you need a traction battery. I first thought that this new hill I was climbing was just a challenge for the Prius. Nope, now that I have a new battery, no issue. My car can zoom right up it now. If your car "races" at all, meaning it revs w/o acceleration, you need it.

 

Bought a used 2004 with 177k miles. Had to replace the ABS pump ($150 eBay).

1) Did you replace the HV battery pack? Not to my knowledge.
2) Did you replace the 12v lead-acid battery? Was told it was new when I bought vehicle.
3) Did you replace the hybrid transaxle fluid? Yes. Used a long piece of PEX tubing to refill.
4) Did you replace the brake pads? Yes.
5) Your lifetime MPG (if available)? I don't get great mileage because my Prius is a truck with a trailer hitch. Loaded with tools and pulling a trailer, I get about 35mpg
6) How often do you change your oil? What brand / product did you use? Every 5000. Not a drop burned. NAPA synthetic with NAPA Gold filter.
7) How about post a picture of 200,000 miles on ODO? Why bother? I'm currently at 210,118

 

I just bought my 2007 Prius on Tuesday, (3 days ago) for $3700. Clean 1 owner, garaged (Looks near perfect), 201k miles. Carfax indicates all the recalls have been done, along with the drive belts and water pump at 155k miles. I'm told it's running Mobil1 Synthetic. No warning lights on dash, everything works perfect! I took it on a road trip thursday (650 miles) with no issues. Couldn't be happier!

As far as the 7 questions go, I can only answer a few.
1. No, the HV battery has not been replaced.
2. I will continue to use Mobil1, since I don't like to switch things up.
3. I can't post pictures for some reason... Is it because I'm new to the forum?

The rest of the questions I really don't know.

 

I got a new 2016 Prius in February, but my 2005 Prius hit 248,000 miles. The engine sounds like crap (like a diesel), it burns a lot of oil (like a diesel), and it's really slow, but it still runs well and I payed the car off a long time ago. I'm still on the first set of brake pads, first hybrid battery, and first shocks! I'm trying to make it to 300,000. I'm pretty sure I'll make it!

 

Have you checked your PCV valve? They are notorious for gunking open and sucking oil in under your throttle body.

I just cracked the 200K miles barrier on the 2007 Touring. Replaced the 12V after 8+ years even though it still tested good. Replaced both HIDs with some $ help from Toyota. Replaced both tail light bulbs. Replaced the speedometer cluster courtesy of Toyota. Those items and lots of sets of Ecopia LRR tires is the sum total of my maintenance. We are burning oil at the rate of a quart in 12-1300 miles which is vastly improved over the 500 miles per quart before switching to Mobil 1 High Mileage. This car still does everything well and consistently delivers over 40 mpg, even at speed. I use a K&N engine air filter and run the tires at 40/38 psi front/rear. When the dash cluster was replaced they lost almost 1500 miles on the odometer so I will load a picture when the new unit shows 200,000 which will actually be 201,500.

 

My 2006 Gen 2 at 200K is movin on to my grandson. He doesn't know it yet. He has always admired the Prius way of life. I movin into a new Gen 4 I picked up last week.
