So the engine is a bit crusty from road salt, but was cheap and has low miles. Getting it ready, installing the cam and injectors tomorrow. Hopefully I'll do the swap this weekend.
I remembered I had done something similar when I rebuilt a 2008 Prius some two years ago. I had to swapped the complete pistons from a Toyota Yaris, and for new piston rings installed when I was done rebuilding. Got massive power, and better economy too. PS: I think swapping the cams and even crankshafts have being done. I can't remember where now. Appears to be maybe one the Latin American or Asian countries.
I'd suggests, you replaced the pistons and rings at same time since you did the can stuff. Stress on the pistons and rings maybe too much
I'm interested in this! If thecaos are that rated as you've posted, I'm thinking the inverter can handle, say for instance, a highlander modified pack(9.6V @6500mAh). Please when you're done, let us know how you fared with the backup generator
Your fuel economy in this regard, would be affected, if you drop in an Otto's engine in there(1nz-fe).
I got the Yaris cam installed, but it won't quite rotate. I believe that the cam followers are pumped up and won't allow the slightly higher lift lobes rotate. Toyota Jesus, did you have to bleed down your followers?
Hmm..... I guess I'm back to square one. I suppose those that successfully swapped cams had enough valvetrain wear to accommodate the higher lift. I guess I've got to run the stock cam.
Both cams won't rotate? What if you only swapped the exhaust cam... it's the only one you really need to have otto cycle.
Not according to my research. The Miller cycle delays the closing of the intake valves, not the exhaust valves.
Can you swap the whole engine for one coming from an Echo and then just transfer the Prius electronics? iPhone ?
True, but this was more of science project, backed up by tons of engineers. I’m curious if a regular shade tree mechanic can just swap the motor and keep the old electronics or if there are sensors and plugs that are not compatible - otherwise I don’t see why people haven’t tried it yet... iPhone ?
Which cam has the interference: intake, exhaust or both? If only one camshaft, replace some or all of the 8 valve lifters. They come in various sizes so that you can adjust the clearance between the intake camshaft lobes and the valve lifters. The intake valve clearance is supposed to be 0.007" to 0.009". Exhaust is 0.011" to 0.013". If both camshafts have interference then you would potentially have to replace 16 valve lifters. But maybe the lifters originally installed on the exhaust side might work on the intake side? Also you could try the lifters from your old engine which potentially might be usable if they are shorter vs. the lifters from the replacement engine. If you have 32 lifters to choose from maybe you don't have to buy that many new ones. The lifters are available in 35 sizes in increments of 0.020 mm (0.0008 in.), from 5.060 mm (0.1992 in.) to 5.740 mm (0.2260 in.)
Clearly but there are a lot of people who need to replace their engine due to high oil consumption - why don’t they put one from an echo instead of another Prius if it’s plug an play? iPhone ?
