Benn awhile, but I thought many reviews showed the displayed mileage being conservative, and people were happy with that. As hey should be. So nothing's changed?
Yeah I think so. Wayne Gerdes apparently had one that behaved thus, acurate mpg, and he let drop that it was slated to be crushed in a week or two. Maybe they "tweaked" the mpg display for final production models, back to the usual?
I find with Pearl S I can put in over 6 litres more after the fuel filler nossle cuts off. I fill till I see fuel in the fill tube. Here in Edmonton the ambient temp is usually lower than the temp in the ground (where the fuel is stored) so it usually shrinks once in the car. Knowing this, I suspect the way you fill the tank is what is making the variation in "accuracy" appear. Again, the Prius IS NOT a "lab instrument", nor do I think you or anyone else could make a fuel economy instrument with repeatable accuracy better than about 10%, due to all the variables. So -I- think Toyota did well, even with the GII and GIII.
Toyota knew, way back in 2009 with the 2010 Prius, the Prius MPG dash gauge was not accurate yet Toyota even after 7 years fails to correct the problem. This is now intentional adjusting the software to show a display in mpg higher than actual by at least 6% or so. I wish someone with authority at Toyota would be addressed on this issue and would at least attempt to give a plausible explanation, though there is none, but as far as I know none have.
It's not a "problem" if it's intentional. Well not for Toyota. I get very consistent error, tank-after-tank. Tank filling shenanigans don't make it go away, just run the risk of dumping gas on your first turn when leaving the gas station, or messing up evaporative emission components.
i'm not chuffed about it, it is what it is. any vehicle reads diffently at the pump than on the display, and on the window sticker. the important thing is that prius leads the way in best overall gas mileage, nothing else matters.
How do I get those screens? I've toggled through everything (I thought) and those are not options in my Two Eco.
This was my first tank. I could of gotten 800 miles but I do not want to push the fuel pump. To fill it back up was 10.2 gallons so the mpg gauge is fairly accurate. I think the accuracy depends on how you drive. With the exclusion of one trip where I pushed it in power mode and got 45 mpg for the trip, I drive very moderate and do not go into power range. If you are constantly using power mode and driving inefficiently it will make it more difficult to gauge MPG
Remember that each of the menus that you scroll left/right can also scroll up/down. To get to the Hybrid System Indicator, scroll to the first menu [the one with the (i)] and then scroll down to the Hybrid System Indicator (it's the 3rd menu I believe after Energy Monitor and Fuel Consumption Record)
If you had asked me before I got the new car, what MPGs am I expect - I would have said low 60's would be great. Now that I have had the car for two short months, I am actually disappointed that this tank looks to fall short of 70 MPG (tracking to 60.5). Have my expectations gotten out of control?
Yes, the expectations are too high. If you get 60 as displayed by the dash and get 55-57 in real life, then that is great. My 2010 said I got about 55-56 mpg averaged over 10,000 miles, and as tracked by fuelly logs, 52.3. So if you get 52.3+5=57.3 in real life, that is a big step up from one generation to the next in my opinion, especially seeing it doesn't have a plug or a much larger battery.

Those are excellent MPGs! I am still waiting to hit 550 per tank in my G3. Maybe when it warms up a bit...
We don't get much of a winter here in SoCal. Does get into the 40's on the way to work in the morning.
