Good thread. Awaiting on list of wheel and tire weights to be posted over time. I'm all for lighter wheels.

There is a racing rule of thumb that says removing 1kg of weight from the wheel (unsprung rotating mass) is worth 3kg removed from the chassis.

I've tried this with a previous car, I owned a Toyota Aygo which had 14in factory alloy wheels weighing about 8kg. Replacing these with Rays CE28Ns weighing 3.51kg each saved about 4.5kg per wheel, or an equivalent of 4.5 x 4 x 3 = 54kg from the chassis.

On a small car like the Aygo, you can feel this difference. The lighter wheels not only have less rotating inertia of course so acceleration and deceleration are very slightly improved, but it also means the same springs and dampers can keep the tyre in contact with the road surface more effectively.

I'd like to go with 15in CE28Ns (4.1kg) but unfortunately it is very hard to get a competitive tyre that fits the wheel and matches the rolling radius of the gen4. There is a Yokohama AO48R in a 205/60r15 size that will work, but it seems to have a very low volume production run and there is no stock in the UK.

Moving to a 16x7 CE28N (5.4kg) is probably the next best thing, and there are plenty of tyres available in the 55 profile that those wheels would allow.

If anybody knows of any decent tyres that fit on 15s and match the Prius rolling radius then I'm all ears :)

    Paul.

You might get what you need to know from Tires by Brand

You can enter your tire size and compare different tires. Included in the comparison is revolutions per mile which can be a good judge of compatibility with your current tire. Whether the tire is available in the UK might be more difficult to determine. Is there a local company with a comparable web site that can help you find what you need?

Thanks for the suggestion, but it really needs a track specialist. TBB didn't have anything apart from the usual all-weather tyres.

The problem is that nobody seems to make a track tyre in a 65 profile. Must be quite hard to get the side wall stiffness without making them very heavy. I use Camskill.co.uk, who do racing discounts for people who need a lot of tyres :) They have AD08R, AO48R, R888R, DZ02G, NS2R, etc. which are most of the main road-legal track brands in the UK.

I am in the US, so I can't predict which tires or wheels exist in UK.

If I go to TireRack and I put in the base model 2, I get a OEM size of 195/65-15 so the speedometer/odometer are set for that size in the US. Rim width of 5.5 to 7 inches. There are 28 Low Rolling Resistance tires in that size here.

    However I can't get CE28Ns in 5 by 100, only 4 bolt patterns. The 16 by 7 is available in 5 by 100, however.

If we look for 16 inch tires with the same circumference. 833 revs per mile, 205/55-16 is close . It fits on 5.5 to 7.5 wheels so that is good. TireRack shows 41 LRR Tires in that size, 2 of which are snow tires and 5 of which are run flats.

The load factor (89 to 94) will matter most to those who carry heavy loads or tow
Speed rating (T to W) will matter most who travel at high speeds
Tread wear (260 to 820) will matter most to those who want long tire life
Traction (A to AA) will matter for those autocrossing
Temperature (B to A) will matter to those who stress their tires (load or performance)

Many "European" brands are represented, the "American" and Asian brands may be unavailable.

So what options do we 15" stock gen 4 owners have in terms of aftermarket wheels and tires that will lower unsprung weight and also yield stock current MPG, possible ?

I have yet to find a 15 inch forged wheel with a 5 x 100 bolt pattern, they all seem to be 4 x 100 until 16 inch.

There's a CE28N 5x100 15x6.5 et45. Your Rays dealer should be able to get it even if it is not advertised.

It is a ten-spoke rather than eight-spoke. TE37s probably would also be worth a look.

There are 15" forged Audi wheels (from the old Audi A3, part number Audi 8L0 601 025 E ). In Europe you can find them cheaply second hand ($100-$200 for a set of 4), they are super light - about 5.7kg (so that is about 12.5 lb). I had them for a while on my second generation Prius and they definitely made a difference.

Those are the ones I have for my winter tyres (195/65/15 Michelin) not that I need them much here in the Uk I run 205 -55-16 in summer

Are the 16 inch 07-09 7 spokes any lighter that the stock base 15 inch wheels. They look really cool but tires would be more as well. Those Audi wheels are neat looking, did they require a hubcentric ring adapter
