Seems that the kiwi consortium is down. Do you still have the doc for the file format of the prius dvd? Is there any news about the file format decoding?
If you live in the bay area and want me to help you make a backup. Send me a message. I have Verbatim DVD+R DL, and DVD-R DL. We can try different media on the 2006 and 07 models.
I have no problem create a backup of my 2007 Prius Navigation DVD ver 6.1 with a verbatim DVD+R DL media. In fact, I'm running the backup copies in my car and stow away the original one. I have 2 recorder on my computer and using Nero 7 to copy disc to disc on the fly.
Just tried to backup 6.1 onto another disk, and when I load it into the Prius, the map info screen reads 6.1, but I get a message stating the disk is either dirty or damaged. Used Nero Express 7 to make the copy from the ISO, and it seemed to go okay... It reads the disk, but the screen keeps flipping to the dirty/damaged message. Wiped off the disk, reinserted, same problem. Tried again to burn as a data disk, no change. Same problem. Also tried to use Nero Burning ROM... no change, same problem. Using Verbatim DVD+R DL disks on my Plextor-800A DVD DL burner, which is a fairly new unit so there shouldn't be any problems.
We have a new '07 Prius Touring (package #5) and I too want to make a "back-up copy" of the NAV DVD and actually use that one in the extremely hot (Florida sun, mid-summer, all windows sealed shut, no additional window tint) Prius and actually store away the original (in the cool house). I am a computer engineer, so no need to "talk down" to me, but I am also used to the previous vehicle we had, an Acura, where one just pushed a button and out comes the NAVI DVD, easy as 1-2-3 !! I have not even looked under the seat to see exactly what the '07 Toyota NAV looks like (only had the vehicle less than a month). How is the media "removed" from the Toyota unit?? Does one have to unplug the NAV connector, unbolt the NAV unit, bring it onto a static free mat and "open it up" to remove the DVD ???? And..... is it a DUAL LAYER DVD that is initially used on Version 6.1 ?? I have a Dell XPS410 with the OEM Samsung (TSST H653A) burner plus a Plextor 755-SA in the second bay. If one can't burn the DL correctly, I am sure the other could. I am running Roxio EMC 9. Also have another machine, Dell Dimension 9150 with two Lite-on DVD +-RW DL burners. EXACTLY what "media" is best to "copy" the original.... DL + -or- DL - ?? Is it best to do a "copy-disk-to-disk"?? Or make an .iso image of the ORIGINAL V6.1 and burn the DL from that image??
*To Eject DVD I turned on acc, then I went to NAV and hit "I agree" and then it ejected as soon as I slid open the door! You'll have to get in the floorboard of the backseat behind the driver,... slide the front seat forward first, then you can access the slide door that protects dust etc from getting to the disk.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(FloridaWen @ Jun 26 2007, 11:16 AM) </div> Your welcome.. I was never able to get one to work.. the burn went well with no errors, but it kept rejecting it... I think the +R's may be most successfull... go back a few posts and check. Also verbatim I remember was one brand of choice... but quite possibly none of that matters.. it may be all about the software that does the burning...whether it copies hidden and erroneous files. I tried Nero 6.614 and clone dvd2 but no success when I did it.... Let me know your settings and tricks if you can get it to work. I have a new program I've been meaning to try.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(windstrings @ Jun 26 2007, 07:34 PM) </div> I wish there was a secret formula myself... I went through four Verbatim DVD+R disks trying to get a copy that would work. No luck at all. Just keeps saying the disk is dirty or defective. I eject it, put the original back inside and bam! Works fine....
My problem right now Is I have no double density disk to try... only single. No biggy, its just a fun challenge for me..... I have over 350 dvd movies backed up..... why not this?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(windstrings @ Jun 26 2007, 07:34 PM) </div> I will go out this week and buy Verbatim DVD+R DL disks [attachmentid=9264] <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(windstrings @ Jun 26 2007, 07:34 PM) </div> I have Roxio Easy Media Creator 9.0, running under MS Windows Vista on a Dell XPS410 with one Dell OEM Samsung (TSST) burner and a second burner, Plextor 755SA. I don't think there are any "hidden" files, but I could be wrong ?? I read here on other posts that a "dupe" was very successful with the correct media. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(windstrings @ Jun 26 2007, 07:34 PM) </div> I will certainly let you know if I am successful with the "dupe" !!
Thanks.. back when I tried last, the DL's were so expensive I got disenchanted at the prospect of making too many coasters. There is something the nav unit doesn't like, unless its hidden files, it must be format of some type.... I told my Nero to copy and ignore errors and I have an .iso file now awaiting to burn.

The correct media makes a world of differences, but so does the proper DVD DL burner as well as DVD burning software program.
It seems the key to getting a backup to work in the Prius is to burn a DVD-R DL or change the book type on a DVD+R DL to DVD-R. Not all DVD burners will allow you to change the book type.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(TheForce @ Jun 28 2007, 08:29 AM) </div> Then should I just "burn" the original media onto a DVD-R DL ???? <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(FloridaWen @ Jun 28 2007, 07:37 AM) </div> Yea.. that doesn't make sense to me either?
I have not tried DVD-R DL yet as my only burner that will handle it is the one for my car PC and its not installed yet. I do know that you must change the book type of DVD+R DL to DVD-R for the Prius to recognize it. I'm currently running a backup with DVD+R DL media and a book type of DVD-R.
Wouldn't it have been simplier just to burn it on a -R? instead of a +R and change the booktype?.... do you think thats a protection of sorts to make it difficult?
You should be able to burn DVD-R DL just fine and have it work in the Prius but it must be a -R Dual Layer so you can fit it all on the disc. You only need to change the book type when using +R DL media so the Prius thinks its got a -R disc. -R DVDs are more compatible because they conform to the DVD standard and this is why you need to change the book type on +R media.
