I have a 2005 that went over 100K not too long ago, owned it since 30K. I think we are at 103K right now. Still going strong. Only changed the 12V battery and the gas engine water pump, plus the recalls. Oil changes every 5K miles. 3 sets of tires.
I'm trying to get more active on this site, as I know own two of these cars... Prius #1 2008 (09/07 build date, 11/07 purchase date) 129,100 miles as of this evening Bought this car 2 days after my wife and I got back from our honeymoon. I have had a few user errors with it (running out of gas), but otherwise, it has been perfectly reliable. I replaced the drive belt at 90K, the 12V battery at 129K, PCV at 65K (and will do so again at my next service). It has been driven in California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and D.C. 3rd set of tires, getting ready to buy a 4th soon. Hoping that it lasts me another 5 years, averages 26,000 miles per year. Miles per year are dropping, as we tend to drive the 2011 more when we drive together, but it could reasonably hit 200,000 miles in the next few years. Prius #2 2011 (09/11 build date, 11/11 purchase date) 31,000 miles as of this evening Bought this car after the first Prius was paid off. Was originally looking at Fords (got an interesting double trade in offer through the mail), but when I saw that a Ford Focus cost the same as a Prius, I stopped in my tracks. Ended up buying this one on an impulse, at $1,700 below invoice (bought on the last day of the month, 11/30). This one could very well catch up to Prius #1, as it is looking like it will get close to 35,000 miles in it's first year.
I was waiting for 200,000 miles to post but won't have the chance. Two days ago my dear wife and daughter in our red '04 Prius spun out on an oil slick near Exit 5 on the New Jersey Turnpike, crossed three lanes of traffic and hit the concrete median barrier almost straight on. She was traveling about 65 MPH before the spin and I can't guess how fast she was going when she hit the barrier. Everything worked perfectly. The seat belts locked, the airbags deployed, and they both walked away with bruises (actually my wife walked away. A nice stranger carried my daughter to the shoulder.) The car saved their lives! Complete integrity of the passenger compartment was maintained. The left front fender jammed the driver's door so the wife had to climb our the passenger side. We bought the car used on February 23 2005 with 14980 miles on the odometer. As of the last fill-up it had travelled 102.108 miles, consumed 1961.69 gallons of gas, which cost us $4895.90. The average gas mileage was 44.41 miles per gallon (the wife drove it most and she has a lead foot on both gas pedal and brake). The total cost of operation, including purchase, gas, service and parts (but excluding insurance) was $32,357.33 over the period of 2779 days that we owned it and the cost per day had dropped to $12.86. The cost per mile has held steady for some time at $0.41. No repairs except for tires. It still has original accessory and propulsion batteries and I was hoping to get some more time on it but fate intervened. Yesterday we bought a brand new Prius V, primarily to give me more leg room. I was cramped in the Prius so bought a Rav4 that mostly stays in the barn. Am now clearing off the old Excel spreadsheet to keep records for the new one. The wife and daughter are off again today in the new car to visit my daughter's Chronic Lyme and associated tick borne disease doctor (who shall remain nameless). I got a call as they passed the place they had the accident. My daughter saw the splotch of Prius read paint on the concrete median. I offered to drive them but the wife quoted her dad after she fell off a horse as a small child, "Get right back up there and do it right!". Will report on the Prius V in seven of eight years.
I'll second that I'm glad everyone is OK! I must say you take meticulous records, I've been thinking doing that too.
I have not been on this forum for years because my 2004 baby has been so worry-free. Purchased in August 2004 (after waiting 3 months), it's still wonderful. Yes, it turned over 100,000 this week and we sang it songs for the road. Now the question: What to do next? When do you know you need new batteries? What's it worth? (a few marks of age, but it great shape). I don't want to give it up and tend to run cars until they go to the grave. They told me I was stoopid; now I have an "icon." What's the verdict on the future?
How well does the battery seem to be holding a charge still? Same as new? As far as what it's worth...try kbb.com
I'm driving a blue '04 Prius with 125,000+ miles. I bought it used 7/24/07 with about 40K miles. I just replaced the 12v battery with the yellow top Optima and also just had to send the MFD off for repair; that's it... not even brakes needed! Just tires, etc. I've done modifications like adding a ScanGauge, automatic door locks, the all-electric mode board, the circuit to 'fool' the intake air temp and increase power when needed (it really does work), shark fin antenna, bumper pad, cargo area tray liner, suspension stiffening board, side trim protectors, K&N air filter, mudflaps, and a few other goodies... I plan on keeping the car until the hi-volt batteries give, and then see what a modification to then-current better batteries might be able to offer -- maybe electric charger, etc!
Our 2005 is at about 106k miles. We've had it since August of '05, bought new with everything but leather. This month I had to put a water pump in it - the first major repair. A week later it was time for an alignment and its 3rd set of tires. We had HydroEdges on it from about 30,000 miles to now. Now it's Continentals and so far they are doing great. We have only had one battery issue. One time about 4 years ago we needed a jump start from AAA. That's it. We change the oil and wiper blades. And it just runs.
2006 Prius. We were placed on a list to acquire one in late '05 and received ours in March '06 with 4 miles on it. Now sitting at over 154,000. Other than regular service and recall repairs, it has been a good vehicle, especially for my wife who puts the miles on it for work. Looking at getting another set of tires and might trade it in next spring.
Just bought a 2006 T4 with 153k miles on the clock. Full service history and drives like new, frankly...
Hi all! Just stopped by to report my 2008 "silver bullet" passed 100k last week on one of my several trips between TN and GA. I drive A LOT, which is why I bought a Prius in the first place. My daily commute is 70+ miles, and that is just home/work/home. Heaven forbid I decide to go somewhere after work! I also drive from GA to TN once or twice a month, and that's 500+ miles round trip. So yeah, I've been on the road a bit. So, lets see... I just bought my third set of tires, just replaced the wipers for the first time (but should have done that a year ago!), I'm on my second set of headlights and third set of air filters, for the cabin and engine. I had to replace my undercarriage guard last week, but that was minor. The first big thing is the replacing of my water pump, but with today's recall, it looks like Toyota might be doing that for me. I've religiously had my oil/filter changed, and I haven't had any major mechanical issues at all, knock on wood. So that's my story, and I'm sticking to it! Cheers!
I recently purchased a 2005 Prius and am really enjoying it. It just turned 120,000 miles and I had read somewhere that you should change the spark plugs. Is this true and should I take it to the dealer to have this done? If so how much do you think it might cost? Any other info or recommendations you can give me on the 2005 upkeep would be greatly appreciated! Glad to be a Prius owner!
Yes, this is true. Any competent mechanic can perform this work. I recommend you have installed only the correct NGK or Denso iridium spark plugs. The plugs will cost around $40 for 4 so you may pay $100 or more depending upon labor costs in your area. You can find the Prius maintenance schedule on the toyota.com website. Toyota Online Owners Manuals and Technical Manuals I suggest you make sure that all items on the 100K mile and 120K mile schedules have been performed. Further, replace the transaxle ATF now.
Greetings all! 2008 Prius, Magnetic Gray, Package 2, owned since new (bought during the Great Prius Shortage of '08). Crossed 100K a little over a week ago. Major milestones: Only one really -- Thanksgiving weekend '09, car was T-boned on the driver's side by a RAV4 running a stop sign (if you do a search for my posts you can find some pics of the carnage...). Since it was so new, its replacement value could absorb a lot of repair cost. Has been running fine since the accident (after a couple of trips back to the body shop to fix some niggling issues). Currently running Goodyear Tripletreds; have noticed a couple MPG hit since switching to them last year after having Nokian WR2s. My 'avatar' is an old plot of my monthly mileage data -- currently my lifetime MPG is 47.1 (70/30 hiway/city)

2008 Barcelona Red, Package 2. I hit 100,000 miles in Jan 2012. I purchased my Prius in Dec 2007, just before gas skyrocketed, in that magical 3 month window with no rebates. Post Oct 2007 and before the 2008 tax rebate. I love my car and have inspired my parents, aunt, and coworker to purchase a Prius (all 2010 tech packages). I drive about 96 mi roundtrip with a carpool, but we've pretty well parked the Sienna with the Prius around. No problems and have tracked every fill. I average 47 mpg year round. Ethanol drops my mpg 10% and I can see it in my records. Best MPG from a tank was 59 on a warm Puget Sound Summer day, worse was 36 on a rare snowy commute.
