Not overkill, that's the correct way to remove them without damaging them (i.e. breaking off clips).
Mine only picks up pedestrians when they are directly behind (or in front of) the car, not when they are approaching from the sides.

I noticed on the Gen 3 I had that it defaulted to the last one paired if that's any help. I'd try un-pairing yours then re-pairing it.
As said above, probably the dealer upped the pressures (and then did a few doughnuts around the car park to bed the tyres in :whistle:).
