Well, bad HG can be caused by or can result in overheating. Sounds like you have both. This is why I would never ever buy used high mileage Prius.
Off topic, but what condition was the EGR system?. I have this theory that plugged EGR contributes to HG problems.
Have you considered changing or at least checking ATF? Is there a difference in noise while turning?
