I was burning quite a bit of oil myself...but not quite the 6 quarts per 800 miles you experienced. I would easily go through a quart per 400-500...
While I agree about temp really mattering with MPGs, the rest is kind of a lot of BS. I've lived in ND for 50+ years. It's hit -30 maybe 4-5 times...
