Def. sounds like you have a 2 or 3. What type of key do you have? the smart key or the regular style key?
My '13 C has 105,000 with original battery getting 45+ MPG with a heavy foot.
toyota claims the ATF is "lifetime". I'm at 101000 and I've changed the fluid twice, simply because I do it myself.

Turned out, it was the fuse that controls both the backup lights and shifter lock.
Here's a long shot but, did you or anybody ever figure out the problem?
In my C1, the wiring is there. behind the left sidepanel when facing the inside the hatch. I put a led strip to those wires, and the best $15 mod...
which cover? the shifter plate or the cup holders?
