Just to close the loop: 3 years and 60k miles later, the Yokohama AVID Touring-S tires still have "meat" on them. Mileage got better and better....
I don't think the consensus here is changing the pads is anything out of the ordinary, but bleeding the hydraulic brake fluid requires the scanner...
