Move to Phoenix. Had this issue in Oregon. The dry heat fixes these issues. Air freshener will temporarily fix the issue for a couple days/week....
Try cleaning the ipod port with a tooth pick or maybe cimpressed air. Pocket lint likes to build up in them. Does another cable work?
