Toyota sells to a LOT more than the US market.

Lol, that's like saying the New England Patriots are still #1 the day after Tom Brady signed a contract to play for Tampa Bay...

Still have to know when and where to apply that torque to not lose control or get stuck.

If we couldn't expand battery production, the best choice to reduce carbon emissions from cars at scale would be mild hybrid diesels.

But we can expand battery production, and are even developing batteries that use different resources. Toyota's statement is more about the fact that they misread the market and didn't invest into Li-ion batteries to support EV growth. They'd be selling a lot more Rav4 PHVs now if they did.

Their EV share in China and even Japan dropped last year.

BYD surpass Toyota in Japan's 2024 EV sales

i'd argue modern diesels w/ their particulate traps, cat converters & urea injection are just as clean as new cars .... and constantly cranking over high compression diesels is not the best thing to do for their longevity.
REX plugin ? That'd be way sweater despite costs.

A non-turbo diesel actually was found to start easier, faster and with fewer emissions in hybrid duty.

have to guess the emissions systems would wear faster but since gas is getting filters and other nonsense the issue might be the same regardless of fuel type

A hybrid with a plug a battery 18 times the size of one in a Prius. Toyota's statement does break out the PHEVs from HEVs.

Then it isn't like having more batteries available would help bZ4X sales.:p

When people refer to EV growth, they usually mean BEVs not PHEVs. That is my point.

And don't you think that every carmaker that has spent this whole decade working on 4-wheel drive electric motor fine tuning with this newfound hundreds of adjustments per second advantage might have more experience than the mid-decade late entry climate denial bribed Fossil fool promoting dummies with their Subaru "4-wheel-expert" lapdog?

That's kinda of a like saying when people care about wanting to give their children a meaningful future by addressing climate change they actually care about substantive change rather than just pretending that we can't change, only be more responsible about refusing to change.

Toyota had proven with real world statistics that the path to substantive, practical is though PHEVs, with HEVS being the lesser choice. I believe the EV movement is to prop up china who controls rare earth mineral production & processing.

    That is a bit odd.
So Europe and the USA are promoting low emissions vehicles to prop up China?
Or perhaps China (in this respect) was better positioned to take advantage of the shift?

We are finding, now that we are looking, quite a few of the materials needed.

I have not seen where the US is promoting low emissions vehicles. They exclusively promote and incentivize EVs only. Some incentives were further restricted to only EVs produced in union shops. For instance, there were no incentives for mu son's 2023 RAV4 Prime when he bought it new. Just EV incentives.Since he runs on EV for his work commute, it is only slightly worse than an EV, climate wise.

    what a coincidence!
The highest profit process (few or less ev's) is the one that matches what they're doing! Wouldn't it be great to see the same kind of research by a totally disinterested third party that didn't see which side of the bread that the butter is on?

Or research from another company with broad experience i electrified vehicles...

Toyota started the big EV push by choosing the electrified Prius to reduce vehicle pollution. I doubt there is another company with as much experience. They improved their product through the initial rough times.

As far as climate change, maybe we need to divert some attention from efficient/clean car design, to smarter city design, putting workplaces, stores and public transit near where people live.

Around us (Coquitlam) they’re building showcase-home neighborhoods further and further up the hillsides, coupled with shopping mall ghettos way the heck off, in flood plain zones, and rapid transit with stations off in the boonies, not remotely close to anyone, due to NIMBY’s.

    And ever more drive-thru’s.

Look up the definition of passé & you find an illustration of a shopping mall. Online shopping solved that.
