Prius pulling an RV? What do you pull !!

I am interested in towing a 500lb towing ramp that folds up for my wife's wheelchair it says I need a class III or a class IV to hitch it to, my prius 2006 can anyone give me any help or idea?

 

All Prius hitches are Class I.

No Prius is rated to tow anything. The total load for a Gen 2 Prius is 850 including you, your wife, and the hitch and chair.

I suspect the least 'wrong' hitch is the 2 inch Tork Lift hitch, which is only rated to 200 pounds.

Thanks Jimbo, It would be a 500lb Heavy Duty Carrier Loading Ramp for Mobility Scooters or Electric Power Wheelchair and I would take it off in the winter, it's just for my wife, she has MS and really needs to take the chair with her especially in the Spring,Summer and beginning of the Fall, I would appreciate any help!

Thanks so much, it's kind of what I thought, the chair is 250 and the least I could find was 400 lbs for the lift, I am trying to think of some way, she really needs to get out again and go see our granddaughter and feel free when she takes her for ice cream she can just drive along with her - means the world to her. So I'm gonna figure something out.

 

I think what you are really saying is that you want to MOUNT the ramp to a hitch on the back of the car.......right ??
"towing" implies that the thing attached to the hitch has it's own wheels on the ground and it doesn't sound like that's what you have.

You probably could get away with an actual small trailer and a class 1 hitch but then there is the problem of finding parking spaces big enough and the difficulty of backing up.

 

I towed 4000 pounds with my prius and 40' trailers with no problems. The trailer also slanted down so I would say over 400 pound tongue weight.

 

Would love to see the pic of a 40' trailer on a Prius!

Every bit of contact with the ground adds friction.

 

I think it's a mistake to pull a trailer with the Prius. I fear for the drive-train whenever I put the pedal to the floor.

Just to clarify the 40' trailer you see is not the 4k pound trailer. The 4k pound trailer was smaller with a boat on it.

Hi All, Wow I'm just seeing all these and never new it was actually possible to tow a trailor with a Prius!

If I may ask.. where does everybody get the Ball from? who makes those, and what is the ball that attaches to your Hitch witch the trailors drop onto called? Thanks in advance!

Hello all! I've read through all the posts on this thread to catch up. Lots of great info. We own a 2013 Prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon) nd I'm ordering the torklift ecohitch 2" to put on. Initially, I just want to be able to use a 4-bike hitch rack to haul the family bikes to the trailheads. Reading this thread has me thinking of some light trailering later on...

I was considering purchasing the riderite air adjustable suspension bags to pump the rear end up for a long upcoming trip (500miles). Does anyone have any thoughts on whether this is necessary for hitch racks? The rack is 30lbs, plus a max of 4 bikes @30lbs (conservative, since 2 are kids) = 150lbs or so of tongue weight. I'm just wondering if I should be worried about that much compression on the rear for an extended drive or if it should be no big deal? Thanks in advance for any thoughts/help.
