    Zero oil consumption @93,000 miles. Just for the record.
    Too many variables to fixate on a cause. 43 complaints (reported on one web site) out of X number of 2010's on the road doesn't lend itself to an accurate statistical analysis. More anecdotal than anything else.

    Add mine to the list of complaints. I still love my Prius, but it started using oil around the 95,000 mark. It has 150,000 now and uses just over 2 quarts per 10,000 miles. Need to do the IM/EGR cleaning and replace the PCV valve and hope that helps.

    Call me old fashioned, but that sounds good for a car with over 100k miles. Modern cars generally consume less oil per mile than cars made 20+ years ago, but with longer oil change intervals it's more common to have to add between changes.

    When I owned cars from the 80s, I'd have to add before the 3,000 mile oil change was due.

    With cars from the 90s, I might have to add before the 5,000 mile oil change, particularly past 100k total miles.

    My '00s lose a little oil between changes (longer than 5k miles), but they're still under 100k miles.

    Excessive oil use? That's the worst complaint? That's like complaining that my tires with 20,000 miles don't grip as well when it rains. Oil use happens to all engines that get old. My PiP is starting to use some at 90k miles. It isn't enough where I would top up during my 10k OCI. The dipstick is lower than where I filled it is all.

    Makes sense. If you only lose say a pint or so every 3000 miles or so, you may not notice. You will notice when you lose a quart by 10000 miles and that's a big deal.

    see above. also, if you have better statistics to offer, go ahead.

    yes, except for one thing. if you gum up your oil rings and do nothing about it, the consumption will escalate to 1Qt/1000miles or worse.

    i actually agree with you. it's bad news/good news. but, keep in mind most people don't check oil and will end up seizing the engine or sell the damaged car to another unsuspecting person.

    In a similar vein, SOME year had to be the worst year Prius, that does not mean that it was a bad year.

    true. this website just compares the number of complaints and rates the severity. note they state:
    The 2008 Toyota Prius has the most overall complaints, & the most-reported problem is with the 2007 Prius for headlight randomly turns off while driving.
    However, they rated the 2010 problems more severe and harder to fix.

    this website in not for comparing different cars or different brands. TrueDelta is much better for that, even though not that accurate (small membership base, i'm a member BTW).

    however, they do make this comment for Saturn ion (the car my teenager son drives currently):
    CarComplaints.com Notes: The Saturn Ion was a compact bundle of hurt wrapped up in a cheap, plastic shell. With so many defective components and a safety rating that a bicycle would be ashamed of, it’s a blessing this car only lasted five model years.

    i didn't see similar notes on toyota cars, so yes, that good news.

    Try our Insight, 2012 (and some newer) had TONS of oil consumption, ours was drinking almost 1"L"/1,000 miles at around 55K miles until the chamber got so gummed up with oil the engine died on us bending some of the rods. Luckily Honda took care of the $5,000 repair bill and hopefully the updated piston seals cure the oil consumption problem....

    Can chime in on this. When the car was scraped it was burning 1quart / 450 miles or so. It was really bad. Mileage was mid-high 30s, no engine knock or codes, just drank oil. Started burning around 100K a bit and then progressively got worse, obviously.

    5,000 mile oil change interval with Toyota 0W20 oil and filter.

    Isn't ICE same on 2010 and 2011-2015? Why would 2010 be any better or worse?

    It's the oldest year of the generation, now going on for 5+ years so they probably have the most miles. ICE is a bit different on 2012+, they replaced the intake manifold (problem with knocking sound on start that is ICE not wanting to start for few seconds) and probably a few other little things. 2010 also had the most recalls (brake pump, etc.), so it could be possible that they messed up something with the ICE too, or better said didn't realise the problem and fixed it on next years. It could also be that those problematic cars were from the first batch (produced end of 2009) which would fall under buy year 2010.

    for comparison, it would be nice to know if people with oil consumption are original owners, and how they drove and maintained their cars. same for people with little to no consumption.
