It was my impression while experimenting briefly with that tilt device that it does not "recalibrate" on "ground-when-armed" per se, as in just at the time that ping goes to ground. Rather, what it seemed to do was when that pin was grounded it would continuously zero the tilt angle on a slow time constant (something in the 20-60s range) and then fire on a rapid tilt change. So with that pin set at ground it was possible to slowly tilt to any other angle and it would not fire, but then make a sudden tilt change and it would fire from the new position. If that is correct you can just ground that pin and it will work. However, you probably want to be sure that +12V is only at that voltage when the car is on, otherwise it will probably fire when the car goes around corners, which should flash the door open dash light.

Unfortunately that also means a thief can probably defeat this tilt sensor by jacking up the car slowly. It wouldn't even need to be continuous motion, just angle steps less than the trigger delta, then wait a few seconds before doing the next step.

 

Sad to hear it but not at all surprised. Too bad the device does not work as the manufacturer DEI described it, which was that the negative voltage sets the angle (implying "once"), not continually sets it.

 

Wait, rotation? Was this done using a scissors jack?

Thieves are not (yet) using those because they are too slow and too much work. They have been using lightweight jacks like in this video:

By my count in that video it took 27 pumps to lift the car about 1 foot. The wheelbase is about 5 feet. arc sine of 1/5 is .201358 radians, or about 11.5 degrees of tilt at around 11.5/27 = 0.43 degrees per pump. That is less than the 1 degree alarm limit, so I'm guessing that one could pump it up slowly too, but maybe if it takes into account acceleration it might fire?
