I found out a new design deficiency, this time with the rear wipers. Normally, wipers can be pivoted back and clicked in place away from the windshield. This is very useful for cleaning and to prevent ice from damaging the wipers during sleet or ice storms. The front are traditional - they can be clicked. But not the back wiper. Dear Toyota: why not??? I recently added Rain-X on both the front and rear windshields. The front ones were not a problem. The rear one: drat. Here is the solution I came up with. I used the Rain-X bottle itself to keep the wiper off the glass while the solution dried. It fit perfectly.
I found this from a 2008 post. I did this for my 2007 and it worked. I haven't tried it yet for my PIP. ===================================================================== on the rear wiper, you can't lift it up because the motion has been limited. LIFT THE PLASTIC CAP AND cut off the plastic tab underneath. "CLIP" the plastic cap back on the pivot point and "voila!" you can now lift the rear wiper to clean the window. I've tried that with my PiP and it works. You can remove that little cap and clip off these little tabs and then you would be able to lift the rear wiper without moving the cap first. But I dont think that's necessary. I just lift the cap and pull up the wiper arm while I'm washing the car.
When I traded in my 2007 the CAP was missing on the rear wiper. I didn't remember losing it. So make sure you securely snap it back in place.
I dont know if it actually comes off (well, everything comes off if you try hard enough I suppose). But if you pry the sides back with your fingers and lift up, it "opens" back (towards the back of the car).. its hinged in the back. Like I said, maybe the cap will come off, but I just lift the sides and flip it back. Its never come off while doing this.
I haven't done it yet. Now that it's snowing, I need to modify my rear wiper so it's easier to brush the snow or scrape the ice. Has any other PIP done it yet?
Yep, I've done it. You lightly pull at the bottom front of the cover and it pivots up from the bottom. You can then lift the arm from the glass.
Did you cut away the Tab, so that the rear wiper stays up without having to remove the cover? Prius Wiper
Interesting. On my 2007 I needed to cut the tab inside the cover to keep the wiper blade up. See the link Prius Wiper
The GenIII rear wiper blade cover has a hinge, so it swings up out of the way. After that, you can pull the wiper arm up and it holds the position.
