    Should this really be possible!?!

I accidently rolled up the driver side back window while my dog had his tail out. The window didn't stop or slow down - it chopped the tail off! This is no small dog either. He weighs about 75 pounds, and had a pretty hefty tail.

Has anyone else experienced something like this? Should I contact Toyota? I worry that if this had been a kid's finger the results would have been much more tragic.

And for the interested, "Tucker" is doing fine. He had a hard couple of days, and is still wearing the chew preventing hood, but he's recuperating nicely.

    Thanks, -FMH

Keep it on the child safe mode!!! How does he look without a tail? Hard to believe a little electric mtr. would do that, but I guess it hit between the vertebrae? Hal

What sort of dog was it FMH? And how much of the tail was severed?

Many years ago a friend of mine nearly killed his pet Doberman in a Subaru with the power windows when his dog got its neck caught in the window as he wound it up. Fortunately he noticed in time and the dog made a full recovery. The pressure was so tight that the dog couldn't bark or yelp or anything to raise attention. It was just fortunate that he happened to look around and see the trapped dog in time!

Personally I've tried to avoid power windows completely and had managed to do so right up until I got the Prius. (Yeah I know, I might seem like a Luddite, shunning new technology. But it's true, despite their convience I really didn't like them and even went as far as deliberately limiting myself to only considering base models in previous cars to avoid them).

Anyway I'm always really cautious about where the dog is when I operate the windows. It seems they really can be dangerous to our four legged friends.

That should not be possible. The windows in all cars since 2000 have an auto reverse feature so children can not get crushed in the window. You should have the car checked.

So how did you preserve the tail and stump until you were able to get your dog to the vet? Also where's the proof?

Anyone near their Prius right now to put their hand in the window and then roll it up and see what happens?

    Here's a fun DIY.

    1. Roll the window down halfway.
    2. Take a diamond file. Sharpen the edge of the window to create a sharp point along the window's edge.
    3. Enjoy your guillotine.

What's the purpose? I have no idea.

I stuck a pen (not my finger first :)) in my driver's window and when the window hit the pen it immediately reversed and went back down about 3/4 of the way down.

I did not try other windows but would think they work the same way.

Seeing how the OP has not replied since the first post, it sounds more like BS.

that's horrible... yet horribly funny in a guy humor sort of way.

the windows only have a safety if they are auto windows.. and you have to use the auto function (auto down, auto up)... and it has to be set (usually it is.. if you unplug the 12v for any reset it has to be re set... which is a simple full up, full down a couple times)

you might have saved his tail if he was in your lap somehow. good thing he didn't have his head out the window.. you really wouldn't of heard a sound then (dog sounds passive as if he doesn't scream till it's too late or he sees blood)

I see you have package 3; didn't your dealer explain that guillotine windows come standard with that package?
