Will there be less leg room after the go-pedal modification?

My naive understanding is that the pedal will be shorter, not nearer or farther from the driver.

 

My understanding is that ~ 1/2" will be cut off the bottom of the accelerator pedal.

 

I see quite a few Toyota's in my work. One thing I notice is that 80% of them come in here (still) with stacked mats in them. But, one really interesting thing I noticed is on an '07 Camry was that the bottom of the gas petal actually touches the floor without the mat in at all. I can see over time the carpet getting worn and then being able to catch the pedal from returning. The Prius doesn't do this. So shorting the gas petal on Camrys could stop that from becoming an issue.

I love the phrase "reconfiguring the floor". What it really means is hammering it into a new shape with a 5lb sledge hammer. Oh goodie! I wonder if Toyota techs will just beat the floor down with the carpet still in the vehicle or try to remove it before hand.

That's what I initially thought. However it turns out the practice is more benign, and involves removing some of the carpet pad under the accelerator pedal.

No stupidity, and the accelerator pedal and all-weather mats are the only current subjects of the G2 Prius recall in the US.

 

Hello Hal, (doggone, I always wanted to say that ever since 2001: A Space Odyssey- how much of a nerd am I?) Special Service Campaign now applies to 04-09 Prius here in the US (do not know about the Emerald Isle) It requires a modification to the accel pedal in which about 3/4 inch is cut from the bottom of the pedal and the pedal is then sanded and reshaped to prevent the possibility of floor mat interference.

Hi Rae Vynn! I'm still wandering in and out... Been going a little nuts lately with the recalls and all the fun that goes with it.... Plus I finally got myself another motorcycle after a few years without and spending most of my free time out riding!

Gotta toss my two cents about here and there... BTW IF you are not comfortable with having your pedal modified, check with your local dealer concerning having them order a new pedal which will be a redesigned model straight from the factory. Any customer who requests a new pedal instead of having theirs modified gets one, no questions asked.

 

Bear....thanks so much for the information. I WAS scheduled for the modification of my '09 Prius pedal on Wednesday. I will call tomorrow morning and ask for the redesigned model from the factory. If I wanted just 3/4" sawed off, I could do that myself!!

Hi Bear68, and tg for your input. A question...does the pedal work, whether modification or redisigned model, HAVE to be done by the local dealer that sold the car and USED to service it, or may we take it to one of two others that are within the same region? Our local service dpt.'s attitude and ineptitude frightens me more than my PRIUS' pedal ever has, and I received my recall notice today.

ANY US dealer can do warranty work on your Prius. Taking the vehicle outside the US means a few more hoops to jump through for warranty work, but I am pretty sure even Canadian dealers can do warranty work on US cars and vice versa with no problems. Mexico and the Caribbean islands, I am not so sure.

 

Bear.....it has been 2 weeks and two calls to Toyota Customer Experience with a request for the Customer Relations Manager to call regarding replacement rather than modification of my pedal. Still no answer from my dealer. Is the factory rep my next step? Would I get that info from Customer Experience or somewhere else? I feel that I am getting sidestepped here..........and I don't like it..........

I dont plan to get my or my wifes 08 Prius hacked on. The peddle seem fine to both of us and do not touch the flooring at all.

I, like so many of you, do not plan to have mine hacked on, unless I have no choice.
I think "simple common sense" would take care of the problem with getting a mat, or something similar, up under the pedal.

Received my recall notice yesterday.
Did not really read it word for word, but did notice they mentioned modifying my gas pedal.
I have this mental image of them taking a cut off wheel to my pedal and hacking things up.
Not a chance!
If they have a purpose designed replacement part, fine, but if they are hacking up my car they can forget about it.
Sounds like a band aid fix............

 

My letter arrived yesterday as well. It really does seem a bit
late in the game, considering the whole floormats flap was back
in early March. It's tempting to write "recipient deceased due
to pedal entrapment" on the thing and send it back.
