Why and how did you get rid of your Gen 2 prius?

    I am seeing less and less gen 2 prius on the road. My wife is driving one and I am keeping it alive. I have removed the battery pack to change out cells 3-5 times already for the past 2-3 years. Today, red triangle came back and I am tired of taking out the pack. Maybe I should replace the whole pack but I want to see how you made your decision.
    So, if you had a gen 2, why and how did you get rid of it?

    How many miles on it and what is the overall condition of it? What other items have you replaced over the years?

    140K. I don't remember all the details but I did replaced the HD headlight bulbs, the center display, the CD radio, 12V battery, brakes, water pump, etc.. but nothing much with the engine except the hybrid battery pack.

    Tires of course. Overall in good condition.

    I have several gen2, can't really let them go easily.

    With your issue, you should just buy a new battery and enjoy the car as it should be enjoyed

    You see less and less of them because they are getting old and have tons of miles on them. They get retired and parts go to fixing cars like your car with the bad module.

    Why 1? Too many miles on my 05 to install a new HV pack( it had 256K miles on it). Didn't want to keep repairing the original pack. Did not want to buy a remanufactured one because you don't know how old the modules will be inside the case of the one you buy.

    Why 2? Wanted a change after six years of driving it. Bought a brand new midsize car to replace it. No regrets (so far).

    How? Sold it outright to someone for $2000.

    At about 113k miles a semi ran a red light and the trailer wheels/tires drug my 2009 about 3 blocks. The insurance totaled it from my description at the scene. Now I have a 2012 v three, 108k miles.

    Thats not bad at all.

    I Bought mine with 123k. 9 yrs 0ld at the time. Due to the age I opted to replace the OE 12v battery from the start rather than wait for it to die at some inconvenient time. It had a noisy front hub also, I replaced both fronts for good measure. I put 50k on it before I had an actual failed component, the coolant control valve. I’m at 267k now and it needs front hubs again. No biggie, just routine upkeep and replacement of things as needed, including a water pump 40k ago. I haven’t had to touch the OEM HV Battery , YET

    The car is in nice overall condition, so IF and when I need a pack. I’ll probably do the Cylindrical cell conversion kit.

    We were broadsided and it was totaled. We took the insurance money and bought another. Now, though, I don't think we would buy another Gen II. I'm not mechanically inclined and the repairs/maintenance are too expensive. The second generation is a great car but It's getting to that age where it's a car for more of a "do it yourself-er". When repairs start matching the Blue Book price of the car we will probably replace the Prius with a newer generation or (more likely) get something a little larger. We're already in our 60's and have long term health considerations that will require something a little easier riding and easier to get in and out of.

    If I hadn't totaled mine, I'd still be driving it. Less than 80K miles, no major repairs, and it ran like a top. I had it for 12 years. Now I have a 2016 Prius 3 with Advanced Tech Package and TSS-P. I love it, too.

    Well, I am in a dilemna based on the amount of miles I drive. Barely a month ago I was at 150k miles where I believe I could realistically get 5k for my car....I drive so much I'm already approaching 166K and in a few months I'll be well over 180K where value will plummet and I'll be lucky to get $3500.

    And I just got into a little fender bender (literally...I bent the fender). So I will probably fix it and sell it. Still very clean with lots of maintenance. Hopefully can get a little over 4k.

    I would like to get a gen 3 with 120-140k miles.

    Read your post 2x. I hear what you’re saying, but am not sure of your actual concern.

    Bottom line is how much does your car cost to drive per mile?

    Mine is astonishing low, INCLUDING all repairs, maintenance and gas.

    You only seem to have a few repair issues outside of the norm for this generation (head unit, CD player and HV battery issues). If it were my car, I would install a new battery myself and drive it into the ground, which will take some doing. But I’m not you and you probably lost some confidence in your car that I haven’t (yet).

    From memory, I have done:
    12V battery; front wheel bearings, rear shocks, HID bulbs (1x each side) and brakes 1x all around And coolant control valve.

    Water pump and belt I consider regular maintenance, as well as a muffler (only) in the upstate NY rust belt.

    The thinking is I can get $4000-$5000 right now.....Or $3500 in the summer....$3000 end of summer....And lucky to get $2500 by fall.

    And if I sell now I can find a nice upgrade and only pay a small difference.

    Stopped driving it because at night I couldn't see, well, never drove it at night, got an 11' and gave it to the daughter, she ditcthed it soon after, it had all the suspension tweek's and 17" wheels, was a blast, terrible night lighting;)

    We had a 2004 blue Prius two. We had 260K miles on it (still with the original hybrid battery) and it ran fine.

    But we'd lost several of the underneath pieces due to scraping on rocky dirt roads. Others were held on by wire. The rear spoiler was loose and held in place with hidden duct tape. The rear window motors had failed so they were stuck in the "up" position. Much of the paint on the roof was gone (we had no garage or carport for the first 12 years of its life). And the piece holding the trunk handle was loose so it came off if you opened it carelessly.

    After I bought my Prime last November, we saw no need for two people owing three Prii (we also own a 2014 V), so we donated it to our local NPR. It sold at auction for $400 which most likely means it has become an organ donor.
