Who's thinking about canceling your preorder?

    Hi folks,
Well, it's getting closer to delivery date and now I'm about 60% at canceling my order.

My situation is that I love getting new tech, so when the PIP was announced, I was all over it. But with all the news coming out about all the cars such as the Accord Plug in, Fusion Plug in, etc, there's going to be plenty of options coming out. With tech you can always say it's futile waiting for something better but the wait isn't long especially if they will offer more electric range. I guess I'm just getting more skeptical at the 15 mile electric range of the PIP. I get the feeling that about 30 miles will become the standard electric range for most Plug in vehicles and even for the next PIP and 30 is a much more useful range, like the Volt. Basically we buy the PIP now and be the first to get a plug in or wait one year get more choices in plug ins, wait no more than 2 years and get a plug in that can do at least 30 miles. Also, have you seen the Lexus Plug in they showed off at the auto show. If the Green carpool stickers were going to run out soon and I absolutely needed carpool I would get the car for sure but it's not my situation.

Not me. The Prius Plug-in is perfect for my daily driving habits. I've been waiting for this car since I saw it at the auto show in NYC last year so my delivery date can't come soon enough for me!

well it is expected that technology will be more available in the future and it will cost less.

However getting stickers with free access to fast lanes may be a good enough reason

    Entirely up to the individual.

My opinion? I think for the vast majority of PIP purchasers, they purchase the vehicle with both the financial resources available to afford a relatively expensive vehicle, and because they want something that represents MORE than just basic transportation.

If you can afford to wait? And more importantly if you want to wait? I happen to agree that we are riding the crest of a wave. I do believe the entire next decade is going to be full of a lot of significant change.

Also? I would "generally" say that IF you are having doubts now? Pre-Purchase? Maybe you do want to pull back. IMO if you are buying a new vehicle, you should be, at least at the time of purchase 100% commited and psyched about the purchase. If you are already having second thoughts? Then you'll just be buying...to trade in, in a year or two..which is also another potential way to look at it.

    PS.

Even if greater/more options do manifest? If we are talking about over the next year or two? I wouldn't expect the PIP technology or product to suddenly fall off the face of the earth. It's going to be one of the most unique, technologically advanced vehicles that is mass produced and available, regardless of what other products come down the line. So you really could purchase and enjoy, and then if something that interested you a lot more comes down the pike? I think PIP should hold trade in value well...it would be a loss, a sacrifice, to trade in in less than 2 years..but it's also a sacrifice to simply wait...YOUR choice.

The Accord plug-in is going to be a new system, and you will have second thought about its 10-15 mile EV range. The Fusion plug-in is said to have 20-21 mile EV range. They will be good cars, but I would not wait for one year.

The PIP will maintain good resale value and something new along the line of 25-30 mile EV range you mentioned will probably be announced next year at this time.

If you are waiting for something better, you will NEVER purchase a new car. There will always be something better coming.

The PiP is perfect for my needs.

The Pip is also perfect for my needs. In fact, I do NOT want more than 15 miles autonomy if they mean losing a seat (Volt) or being limited in range (Leaf), or adding cost or weight to the car (Fusion, Energi), or requiring the installation of a new outlet.

For MY needs, Toyota found the exact perfect balance. My commute to and from work will be 100% electric with the PiP, yet I will carry very little battery when needing to switch to HV mode for week-end trips.

Everybody has different needs, but mine are 100% covered by the PiP.

If you are not 100% sure then you should cancel before it's too late, and let somebody else (with different needs) buy your car.

This seems right. If you want a mid size sedan or like those cars better, then wait. I doubt they will have much better range. Why not wait until reviews of the phv comes out before cancelling? By then more details about the fusion energi may be out.

    committing

Whatever gets me into the SoCal HOV lanes and doesn't limit my travel ANYWHERE (other than pit stops for gasoline and/or what fits with my normal routine daily/overnight wall plug-ins) is what I am going to be in for at least the next three years.

There's always going to be a better mousetrap at some point in time. Some other color sticker or some other car that might work. I am committed to the quality of my own life - not to sit in the usual traffic I was able to avoid from August 2005 till July 1, 2011.

The one thing I will commit to is my product and my faith in it. I won't drive a Honda NGV and no way would you catch me in a Volt, even if they were free. I'd rather sit in traffic.

At some point, you have to commit to something. Save the planet, try and buy time, work out a route to work or school that will help you use 0 fuel.... choose a car that suits you and stick with it... whatever your THING is, figure out what your priority is. Commit. You decide the time frame. Three years? Five? One?

    Just some thoughts.

So many that do not like the Volt. Yet I have not put gas in it since November third, and have only used .4 gallons of gas since November 3rd. Up until Sunday Thanksgiving was the last time we put gas in our Prius, and it was only down to a half tank Sunday. I just filled it cause gas prices are going up again. You guys truly are missing out. I love my Prius, but man my Volt is so much more fun to drive. :DTo each their own though.

To the original topic. I don't think I'd cancel my PiP order if I were you. Personally I would like to trade our Prius for a PiP in the future as it is perfect for the wife. My commute is farther so I need a Volt/Leaf. People just need to take a look at what they realistically are willing to pay, and what they expect to get out of the car. As said above if you are going to hold out for newer tech this segment will be changing a lot over a short period, so you will be holding on to your money for awhile.. Personally I think gas prices are going to go up pretty good this time around, and cars like this are going to get much much more expensive before it is over with... Remember Prius prices last year? Is something to think about.

My wife cancelled her order for a plug in prius for reasons due to comfort and safety (kids) I have a question regarding the transition from HOV lanes to toll roads in Los Angeles county. Will a plug in Prius have to pay for toll? Oh yes they do. I just read the article.

When I ordered, I was at about 50-50 chance of cancelling.

A few weeks after I ordered, I was about 99-1 chance of cancelling.

Today, I'm at about 60-40 chance of cancelling.

    Tomorrow, who knows? ;)

I'm sure when my car gets here, I won't have any idea if I want it. :p

    excited!

I am very excited about my car coming!
I can't wait to go zipping by in the carpool lanes to get home fast. I cannot wait to see my 73 toll road bill drop to ground zero again. And, as I have calculated lightly, I can't wait to see my fuel bill drop by 1/3rd!!
I can't wait to add leather to my new car in any color I want it to be, and to stick my <heart sign> N Prius plates on my car again!

If they pull that here on the 880 or highway 237, I'll definitely cancel my order.

It looks like it's different for the new 880/237 express lanes:

Who can use VTA's Express Lanes?

Vehicles carrying at least two people of any age, buses, vanpools, motorcycles and clean air vehicles with applicable decals can use express lanes toll-free and do not need to carry a transponder. Only people who are driving alone must pay a toll to use express lanes.

Why is that (the Volt is "more fun to drive)"? I've heard that before, but no one has ever said why.

Personally, I love driving my 2005 Prius (although my wife now drives it so I rarely drive it anymore). I expect the PHEV will be much more fun than my 2005 Prius (and I will be the one driving it). :)

Think about why you think the pip will be more fun, it will answer some of your question.

Driving electric is neat. Lots of prius owners like the experience in the limited extent they are able to now with the slow speed EV feature. Extend that to accelerating up to highway speeds and slipping silently through traffic with no whirring or whining from an ICE, instant acceleration every time you touch the accelerator, and in my opinion the extra weight gives it a more confident feel of gripping the road.

It feels more like driving my old sporty pontiac than my old efficient prius, while still being much more efficient than my old prius.
