    Hello all,

    Who will be the No.1 vehicle manufacturer about global sales numbers in 2006, GM or Toyota?

    There are numbers until the third quarter this year.
    My guess is...
    Code:
    (unit=1,000 vehicles)
    GM
           2005   2006   2006/2005 percent
      Q1  2,107  2,200    104.4%
      Q2  2,601  2,400     92.3%
      Q3  2,362  2,296     97.2%
      Q4  2,100 (2,057)   (98.0%) <- my guess
    =================
    total 9,170 (8,953)           <- my guess

    TOYOTA
           2005   2006   2006/2005 percent
      Q1  2,082  2,306    110.8%
      Q2  2,054  2,214    107.8%
      Q3  1,989  2,182    109.7%
      Q4  2,108 (2,307)  (109.4%) <- my guess
    =================
    total 8,233 (9,009)           <- my guess

    Toyota will win!

    Wow. I had no idea the numbers were there already.
    I expected a close race by the end of 2007, not 2006.

    Hi Tony,

    Agree for sure in 2007.

    Hi all,
    I'm not a paid subscribers at http://www.autonews.com/ , but their headline says...

    Toyota, by an iota, tops GM in '06 sales
    It's official: Toyota is the largest automaker in the world, edging out General Motors by a few microvans. In 2006, Toyota sold 8,808,000 vehicles, and GM sold 8,679,860, ending GM's reign as No. 1.

    My only objection to the article is attributing Toyota's lead to "a technicallity". Imagine that for a sale to be counted you have to own more than half the company. If this weren't the case, GM could buy 1% of Toyota's outstanding stock and double their sales.

    Actually, it was my impression that Toyota recalled more vehicles in 2006 than it built.

    When you chart the sales trends over the last few years, it's pretty much a no brainer. Toyota sales going up and GM's are on the way down ... factories of GM being close here in the U.S. while Toyota continues to build factories here. Next question please
