Pretty straight forward question- who has gone from a Gen III Prius to a PIP?
    Part II- Why?
Part III- are you happy you did?
Part IV (optional for extra credit) Did you get grief from your SO (significant other)?
    **********************************************************
    I'll start-
I traded in my 2012 Prius Five after 8 months ownership for the base PIP.
I wanted better fuel economy (maxed out the Five at 50.5 lifetime mpg)- and I love tech.
Happy? Very! The PIP is awesome :)
Grief from SO? Yes- but she got over it as soon as the next crisis hit- with two teenage daughters, that was the very next day :p

    I went from a 2006 Prius to a 2010 Prius V with Advanced Technology package to a 2012 Prius Plug-in Advanced.

I wanted to drive around in EV for many more miles than EV mode in the standard liftback could provide.

No with a little yes thrown in. While I love Prius, the PiP does not work for me. With the weather here in the NE, the engine simply needs to run too often to provide simple window defogging. And for my commutes the range is just not enough. All too often the engine needs to start just a mile or two shy of my home and when it starts, it runs and runs and runs. With all that said, while the PiP doesn't work out for me and I'm not ultra happy with it at the moment that does not mean it would not work for everyone. I'll admit it, the biggest thing for me is while the PiP still nets me great MPG even with the engine coming on for a little bit of the trip, I personally simply want ALL EV trips, and that is something the PiP cannot provide.

No. She does not drive so really doesn't care what vehicle I buy.

I can't answer your questions because I haven't done it...yet. I do have the same desire. My Three is 5 months old, not quite to the 5K service miles yet. I make a short trip to the gym every morning and believe the PIP would do well on EV in our California weather. What did it cost you to make the trade?

I moved from a 2010 gen III V with AT package to a 2012 PIP Advanced. Why? I had a cold that week and in the fever it seemed like a good idea. That and $4,000 incentives from TFS (that I read about on PriusChat while I was home sick.) Thrilled I did. Love the HUD. A 2.2 mile commute can be easily done in EV mode. Love the increased mileage and stronger battery power. Had been watching reviews on the C-Max but it looked like a bust. And I love DRCC!

SO wasn't thrilled but approved - and now I owe the family a vacation to Disney World this summer?!

I went from a GenIII Three to a PIP base.
I thought the PIP was interesting and couldn't pass up the deal.
With my commute, the PIP is working just fine, so I'm happy with the change.
I didn't get any grief from the cat at all.

    I did it... I went from a 2010 "4" in Blizzard Pearl to a 2012 Standard Plug-in in Blue.

Why? I thought it was a good idea at the time, with the state and federal incentives and the CA carpool sticker, it appeared to be worthwhile for commuting. (The sad thing is I paid full price, whereas most are paying a lot less...grr)

I am not happy I did... the windshield problem has been too much of a pain in the nice person to deal with. It's been a year nearly and I am still dealing with it.

Got a decent trade-in for my Five- with the Fed Tax Rebate, Toyota finance credit and a local $500 utility- I was a bit under $2500 out of pocket for the upgrade.

Technically no, actually yes. I visited my local dealer, checked out the 2013 Prius. Briefly discussed all models and I inquired about the PIP. Decided I wanted a Prius 5 with ATP in silver. Dealer found one and would have it shipped from NE area. I placed a $500 deposit. Within a week, I kept thinking I should have gone with a PIP. Found a 2012 in northern VA with the good incentives. Was willing to lose my original deposit if necessary. Had to place a $1000 deposit to hold for one day. Two deposits and no Prius? I hate making quick deadline financial decisions. Picked up my Prius Plug-In Advance the next day. Wifey couldn't believe I purchased a Prius, but no grief. If I'm happy, she's happy. My original dealer couldn't have been nicer in refunding my original deposit. Overall, I wanted a Prius, glad I thought things through and got the right model the first time. Only negative, I still had to have the Prius 5 17" wheels. Found a used set and new tires, had them on the first week. Happy? Yup.

I started with a Prius 2004 and purchased it in mid 2005. Converted it to a PHEV in June 2006.
Replaced all the PHEV gear to a 2008 in late 2011 due to a total claim.
I was one of the early PiP adopters in NY State with car delivery #5.
Now we own 2 PiP, satisfied? you bet.
I does fit our commuting very well. Only regret is about the short EV range but I have a work around the case in the works.
I was able to recharge at work but the installation of the stanchion is disable since a while thanks to Charge-Point and my employer disagreement.
I received full support from my wife, THE SO in my case in the purchase of the PiP; by the way she inherit my 2008 PHEV.

We bought a Blizzard Pearl 2010 because my old 300 TD wagon had over 320k on it and it was beginning to get uncomfortable. I was trying to hold out for a plug-in but I just didn't want to wait any longer. I had a $500 deposit sitting at the local Toy dealership waiting for that first plug-in that had been rumored to arrive and the deposit was two years old by the time we finally bought the Gen III. The plug-in is what I had wanted from the get, so when it was finally available, with a group-buy deal, I immediately jumped on the band wagon. I feel that I got the best price at that time.
Our 2012 Sea Glass Pearl is the best car I've ever owned (but then I said that 'bout our Gen III) and I'm so glad that I have the plug-in technology. It easily gets better mileage then the 2010, I like the color better, and although it's an incremental step in the evolution of personal transportation, I'm thrilled that I can be a part of it. I'm not 'welded' to Toyota and if Tesla comes down in price, or the Volt greatly increases it's ICE mileage, or a new start-up emerges with better/cleaner/more efficient design or next year's PiP had double the EV range, then I would trade in our beloved PiP.
No static from the gf, although she really hated to see the old Blizzard go! She's now totally into our current ride. So, YES we're very happy we did.

I went from a Gen II 2005 to a Gen II 2007...and then to a Gen III (IV package, sunroof car) which I had for less than 1 year, to my 2012 PHEV base... and 9 months later with 27K on it, it's the best Prius! :)

I went from a Gen II (which we still drive) to the PHEV. I eked out 50 mpg on the Gen III, and I'm now squeezing 70 mpg out of the PHEV.

Just do it. If you can keep the GenIII, that'd be even better. You'd be hit pretty hard in a trade.

Bought a Certified Pre-owned 2010 Prius II in Feb 12'.

Took a drive into one of the dealer sales events Nov 12'. Figured I would see what they have to offer me for my current monthly payment. Drove off with a Base PIP for $9 more a month. Went from 48-54mpg in Gen3 to 71.4mpg avg over 3k+ miles.

Very happy to have a brand new car with heated seats and bluetooth/nav/backup cam for $9 more a month! I'd pull off at least 100mpg if the PIP range was that of the Volt. I'm waiting patiently for the next generation PIP.

The SO drives our Sequoia and loves her beast. She has a 5mi round trip commute and only works 3 days a week. She likes that I'm saving more $$ with fewer fill ups :)

How do you get only 47.6 MPG on the PIP with only a 2.2 mile commute? That seems so low.

Sad I know. New car. I get 999 all week. 4 trips from Phila to Rochester NY driving 75 takes a toll. That should be over soon. (Son in college). Hoping for much better going forward.

    reddavid,
Yea! I know the feeling, drove mine back from dealer 1453 miles in winter weather about 42 mpg for 3 tanks and two tanks of about 50 mpg, then about a week later a 450 mile hwy trip 60 mpg. I finally got into more normal driving for me, with just a few hwy trips this year, mostly in town now.

At least I can get there on one tank. It would take twice that in the Rav 4. No complaints.
