I just traded my 2013 Prius for a white 2024 XSE and am looking for smaller wheels. I like the 17 x 7" but am seeing offsets available at 38, 40 and 42. A lot of people have the 40 but am curious about fitment for the 38 and 42. Does anybody have photos to share or thoughts about which to choose? Also wondering about 7 1/2" rims as they also work with the preferred by this forum tire size of 225/55 r17. Advantages/disadvantages?
Wheel, not rim. Just so no one makes fun of you later. You'll lose mpg the wider wheel you go. More contact to the road means more friction but also means better stopping power and better traction. You'll also "feel" the road more. Wider on these cars only makes sense for aesthetics or for increased traction needs. Alloy Wheel and Tyre Fitment Calculator. Offset, Tyre Stretch and Speedo Error | Will They Fit OEM 19" vs what you're looking at. More sidewall is better but you need to consider clearance not just for brake/suspension but also fender area. When I shopped out my winter wheels I did so based on weight as my primary consideration. Also make sure you don't ignore the center bore size. Has to be as big or bigger than 60mm I believe. If bigger you'll NEED spacer rings.
You need wheels that are compatible with the width of tire you're planning on running, and usually you shoot for the middle of that range. The 225/55/17 requires a wheel between 6-8" wide. You're going to find tons of wheels in the 7-7.5" range that will work great. Generally for this car I would go with a lower offset value for narrower wheels/tires, and higher offset for wider wheels/tires. When you're talking the offset like the 38mm vs. 42mm the 42mm is going to be 4mm more inset at the edge of the wheel. The difference between those in that range will be very subtle. The 5th gen has a generous amount of space/clearance. I think you could run anything between like a +32 and +50 again depending on the width of the wheel and what fitment you're going for.
As well as the mpg loss from the extra contact area, 225/55R17 is wide enough to possibly be heavier than the original 195/50R19 wheels+tyres - the calculator I'm looking at estimates 5% heavier with the 17x7.5, or 1.4% with the 17x7. And those also ideal for the 17x7 wheels you were considering, and usable on OEM 17x6.5 wheels.
I'm interested in these rims, Enkei Performance Series EKM3 which are 17" x 7" and they come in two offsets, 38 and 45. I would really like for the wheels to not stick out at all, would the 45's work? ENKEI Performance Series EKM3 – Wheels Collection Ltd.
Yes those will be fine. Per my napkin math they should sit 3/4" to 1"-ish to the inside of the edge of the fender.
