Don't know if this is allowed to ask on here. Need a newer version because my old one is possibly having outdated firmware issues.

Shouldn’t be illegal to post. We have a Prius parts seller here that runs an ecommerce site, stuff never ships or physically in stock but customers are charged every day and the seller posts on here on a regular basis . And we do oil catch can add on in CA which Is not legal.

I bought a cheap cable and CD on ebay. The CD did not work, but I found Techstream software with Oracle VM and Acrinis True Image on the web. The first time I tried to use it, a message read that I needed drivers (for the USB cable?) After then, I can open TS but get the message that it is "Powered off". What is powered off? The car is on, the laptop is on, the red light on the OBD connector is on.
Do I need a driver for the cable? see pic IMG_2709.JPG

I don't know why it says that That's interesting so you're still an oracle or something I don't know what but when text dream opens and is running obviously it'll look quite a bit different like pictures you see on the web I'm sure but I'm sure as one of the guys that is in the industry will come along in a minute and tell you what happens in this particular software.

I just found out that I get the same thing with the USB cable unplugged from laptop. And I did get other screens after the other (first) one. But I figured that the basic problem is that something is powered off. see pics

Yeah that's the screen I'm looking for so now you're in tech and you see you want to connect to the vehicle and you click on that and then the VIM blah blah blah can't connect because in the bottom right hand corner of the screen there should be a little icon that shows you that your v i m cable is connected and green when I connect my red X horse cable it lights up in red waits until it is seen by tech and connected turns that little thing down there in the right bottom taskbar green and if I hover over it it tells me the exhorse cable is connected yours should do similar If not then you need drivers for that cable or that cable's not wired properly or something companies alter the j standard just because they feel like it and hence all the problems show up with these funny cables mine is the real thing and it lights up red and then it starts moving green arrows as data moves back and forth by directionally across the OBD2 connector at least that's what it seems like to me here.

Just highlight Techstream on the left side like the picture you posted, and then click on green start arrow.

So, maybe my problem is that I need drivers for the cable? Are there drivers for the cable? The cable is a "MINI-VCI J2534 Standard OBDII Communucation Interface"

I got into new screens. The red light in the OBD clear shell has always been red. It never changed to green. Here are the new screens.

Just hit "continue" & see what happens. When (this version) TS tries to connect to the car it first wants to check in with Toyota servers. Usually once you tell it continue (ie, ignore the lack of network connection) then it'll scan for all systems on the car.

    Tom,
I just tried again. I plugged in the USB last (with laptop already turned on). IT WORKED!!!!! Now I need to learn how to use it.
Will it tell me more specifically how to fix a P0401 code? I cleaned IM, EGR valve, cooler, and pipes. Will it check my MAP sensor?
I will search for brake bleeding procedure.
Thank you so much for your help.

No, it will not tell you how to fix a P0401 code. That trouble code is the least of your worries. Techstream can read the trouble codes, look at live data from the car, and run active tests, among other things.

Yes, it can check if the MAP sensor is working if you know what to look at.

Your main concerns are bleeding the brakes, trouble code P0AA6, and getting the car to start.

    Did you run health check?

No it won’t tell you the steps because it is not a legal version online with Toyota’s TIS Technical Information System. You can get 2 days of TIS for $25, find the DTC troubleshooting procedure you want and download it. While online you can follow links in the document to sub procedures.

    IMG_5290.jpeg

However many of those docs are already posted on Priuschat so directly google them (which works better than this sites search function most of the time).

In the spirit of “Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”

For example googling priuschat dtc 401 gives me a thread where Mendel posted the doc. Interestingly you are in that thread as well.

As part of that doc you will find an “Inspection Procedure” which includes an egr step test you can run with your Techstream. It verifies the egr will close and seal (leaking is one cause of P0401) and verifies the MAP sensor while in inspection/maintenance constant idling mode.

So clogging is not the only reason P0401 comes up. In fact the egr valve leaking/sticking is a common problem, with a better egr valve available (25620-37120) or getting the valve cleaner or working better (such as internal wear called “ski jump” ramp by Chapman). A vacuum leak in the valve to intake piping or gaskets will also trip P0401.

Thank you. I should have time to try those things next week.
To me, it is so amazing that the car has so many transducers. It knows everything.
