When putting car in HV/EV mode to self charge battery, where does charging energy come from? Is that setting using gasoline engine to charge battery? If so, I'm not seeing the point of saving gas then. I also noticed engine revved really high when I used that setting and tried to get on highway, so I immediately disengaged it.

    Yep, uses gas to charge.

There might be some fringe cases where it saves gas overall, but it is more about adding EV range for later. Either because charging won't be available at the destination, and later trips can be covered by EV, or you're heading to an ICE exclusion zone, like some European cities have.

Sales people should be instructed in how t use “charge mode” so they can demo Primes in EV mode because they never seem to have a Prime charged up when you want to do a test drive.
