I just got a two-toned perforated leather steering wheel cover from Wheelskins. Gray on the top and bottom and black on the sides. It takes a while to put it on as you have to sew it onto the steering wheel. But ... it looks great!!! And, it feels so much better than the OEM steering wheel. I highly recommend it. Expect to spend at least an hour putting it on. :)

So, take a picture! I agree, it really improves the steering wheel. I drove a friend's Prius the other day and the plastic wheel seemed so skinny. I put a burgundy/black Wheelskin in my 2005 since it had the burgundy dash. I went with solid black in my 2008. Did you get the smooth or perforated version?

Perforated! I'll try to take a photo this weekend.

What is the color of your car's interior? Do you think that the wheelskin would match the other color interior options?

As you can see by the photo, my car is silver. The interior is black and gray so I decided to stay with that combo and ordered a charcoal gray and black combo. I ordered it with the gray on the top and bottom, thinking that the black on the sides wouldn't show dirt as easily. I tend to drive with my hands on the sides. Wheelskins has many colors to choose from. I chose to go conservative. :thumb:

Do you have any recommendations for covers for a prius with the lighter interior color (I think it's called Bisque or something)? It doesn't have to be two tone. Maybe sand or oak or tan along with black (or no other color at all)?

The factory cover for a bisque interior is black. This will also keep any dirt or oil from your hands showing on the cover. I put a black wheelskin cover on my 07 with a grey interior and it looks very nice,(pictures in another older thread) A two tone may work better where you grip it with your hands is a dark color to prevent stains and any other color you like for an accent. Good luck with your choice.

I think it's a personal preference. But IMO you can go with:

    1. All black.

    2. Black, w/color to match the Bisque shades of the interior.

    3. Black, w/color to match the car's exterior paint color.

I've got the bisque interior and I went with all black because the wheel is all black. Top and bottom are perforated, sides a regular.

My wheel skin cover is medium gray that matches the interior well.

But if I had it to do all over again, I think I might get a solid black one becuase as you can see, the gray dye is not applied very thick. Within a couple of months, I started noticing black scuff marks around the wheel, and have no recolection of anything that could have scraped it other than some jeans at the wort.

Now, the whole outside of the wheel has a black and gray marbled effect in less than a full year.

Thanks for the suggestions. You said it took a while to put the cover on. Was that because it was difficult, or because it was tedious and takes a while but not difficult?

It is mostly tedious, but fun too, as you are accomplishing something.

You need to pull the laces very tight to get the leather to come together for a nice tight seam that looks like this.

And your hands may be raw at the end if not wearing gloves. You may need to bo back and relace a few areas before you are really satisfied.
I think if you could warm the leather by sitting it in the sun or put it in a 125 degree oven, you could fit and streach it easier.

Here is a photo of the last area I never really got to the point I was happy but after three attempts, it was good enough.

It's really tight (and should be). So you need to let the wheelskin sit in the sun a bit before stretching it over the wheel. I parked my car in the sun and put it on the dash for a bit to get it really warmed up.

I also didn't try to do it fast. I spent the weekend on it.

I put it on and let it stretch. I stitched it. Then came back hours later and tightened it. Then tightened it the next day. And hours later gave it one last tighten. Then I tied it off. I figured doing it slow and easy would prevent me from ripping out any holes by being too aggressive.

Hey Everybody, I finally got around to taking a photo of the wheelskins cover I installed. I only have one minor wrinkle at the bottom left and I'll be taking care of that this weekend. Not too bad for a first timer at this kind of thing. Here are a couple of suggestions I'd pass on to anyone wanting to install one of these: 1: Be prepared to take your time. This is not a half-hour job. Give yourself a couple of hours to do it right; 2: If you happen to see any tangles happening while you're sewing on the cover, stop immediately and take care of them. Don't get frustrated with the tangles, just take a deep breath and deal with them. You're working with waxed thread and you "will" get tangles from time to time; 3: If you get the perforated cover like I did, I would highly suggest widening the thread holes ever so slightly so they're easy to spot when threading the cover. It gets difficult when your inserting the needle from the rear as there's not a lot of head room there. Widening the holes just slightly helped greatly. I used an awl to do this. It worked great. Just take your time, and I guarantee you; it's time well spent. I love the look! Especially the perforated two tone colors. The charcoal and black cover looks so classy on the silver Prius. I especially like the feel of the perforated leather. It isn't as slippery as the smooth leather.
