I have a 2012 silver Prius and have noticed an intersting phenomina occurs when driving. When driving my wife's car or my Jeep Grand Cherokee it's rare that this ever happens. There are certain drivers who seem to think a Prius is something to cut off in order to make a right or left turn, I mean their car is actually behind you several car lengths as you approach an intersection. They speed up at the last minute, cut you off by changing lanes right in front of you, slam on the brakes and make their turn. I usually drive 5 or more miles an hour over the speed limit and, in some cases, I see it coming so I ratchet up the speed but they still manage to make it happen.

Now the Prius under full throttle isn't a slow car. This morning I had a lady working to get ahead of me for some reason. At one point we were at an intersection with two lanes each direction stopped at a red light. Just to test my theory I put the pedal to the floor when the light turned green to see what she would do. Sure enough she took off and actually struggled to get ahead of me. As we approached traffic she about took the front bumper off my Prius cutting over to get in front of me. I had two choices, slam on the brakes or move into her former lane (quckly) to keep from hitting her. I made the lane change and she had to slow for the approaching traffic, I immediately got around her and promptly returned the favor by getting back in my lane ahead of her. Naturally I got the complimentary single finger salute.

I'm getting to the point where I am getting very frustrated by all this. It happens a lot in this car, and hardly ever in any other car I drive. My driving style is such that I am never in anyone's way, and if this lady would have flipped on the turn signal to make the lane change in front of me I would have backed off and let her in. A few weeks ago a guy in a pick up truck did everything he could to drive around me, slam on the brakes and make a right turn in front of me. There were no cars behind me and he came out of nowhere, so it wasn't like I had managed to pi$$ him off somewhere back down the road.

I think other drivers have a general lack of respect for Prius drivers. Some of their actions border on the dangerous...like the lady who about took me out just to be in front. I know a lot of Prius drivers use the "pulse and glide" method which makes me want to cut them off, so I would guess we all have this negative stigma or something.

I suppose many drivers see a Prius and think we are a bunch of nerdy drivers with nothing better to do than get in their way.

Just fit a Bumper Buddy up front and shove them off into the weeds. They didn't signal, right? ;-)

Fortunately for me I have not noticed any Prius rage. But I wouldn't mind dishing out some by punching that lady in the beak.

People perceive Prii as slow even though they aren't. I fight back with aggressive driving and refuse to let them pass or get in front of me.

I've also seen this type of Prius hate. I braked for a flock of turkeys and had this yahoo in a pickup pass me on a blind turn going uphill.

When I started driving my prius a few years ago, I saw more of that. Now, that gas is more expensive, the SUVs and pickups are trying to save gas money and drive slow. I easily out pace them, especially as I start very quickly on green lights, unlike most of the slow locals. But something like that actually happened yesterday (incidentally, female driver of some older SUV). Some people work hard to show they are superior to those "smug" prius drivers.

I have had it happen to me several times. Once was a huge pick up and just this week, a Nissan Murano. Both were changing lanes without a signal and caused me to almost swerve off the road! No "sorry" or sheepish looks! Geeze!!!!

It happens, I realized that driving aggressively to try and get back at them is very childish.., plus it just lowers my mpg and nothing positive comes from driving that way, so now when they drive like idiots I let them go, and I laugh at them and enjoy my great mpg. Plus after all that aggression you end up splitting up later down the road and NEVER see them again. So what's the point, it proves nothing and is a waste of time...

I too have noticed other drivers are more likely cut me off or even more so, pull out in front of me to get ahead of me instead of behind me. And its not like they can't see me coming in my bright red Prius.
The good thing is I'm so happy to have finally been able to upgrade from my 1993 Ford Escort wagon that when I see drivers acting like this I make a point to stay away from them. I don't need their lack of anger management to result in my Prius ending up in a repair shop.
I did have a bit of a scare yesterday though. I was driving down a street in a small town with angle parking along the side. All the parking spots were filled. I was about in the middle of the block when a cars starting rapidly backing out towards me. Now this likely had nothing to do with the type of car I was driving but rather the drivers lack of being able to see down the street when they first starting backing up and not easing back far enough to see before backing up quickly. Out of instinct I braked and swearved at the same time. The driver did manage to stop before he t-boned me but the quick responsiveness of the Prius did give him the room to get stopped. I don't think a belt driven power steering pump would have allowed me to swearved as quickly as the Prius did since the engine RPMs and power steering pressure would have been dropping once I lifted my foot of the gas. (With 260,000 miles I was glad when the steering wheel would turn and the brakes would work on the Escort. )
So I look at it as, if others drivers want to drive agressively around me I will for the most part let them go. I also have the HSI right there reminding me that I can afford the payments because of what I am saving on gas. (2000 miles in 2 weeks, 30 MPG vs. 53 MPG, apporx $4/gal = $115 in savings in 2 weeks! At this pace I will save $250/month on gas!)
But, I do like knowing that when needed, the Prius is a capable car and can do what I need it to do when and where I need it to.

Every Prius hate post turns into how the Prius gets better mpg. What does that have to do with anything? Driving a Prius does not make me a better or worst person, it's only a car. When I drive my roadster or my Prius, I still have the same right to use the road as anyone else. Driving the Prius is not going to turn me into someone else. I will return what have been given, that is how I live and driving a Prius will not change that.
