For me its got to be the dining room set (table and four chairs). I've had sections of 10' long pvc in my car as well for work. saved us a few trips and time while I was working.

so what have you put in your Prius hatch?

I've only had the car a couple weeks, but I just did a big gardening project this past weekend, and had lots of 1.5 and 4 inch PVC pipe (wrapped in a tarp, for my cars sake) and 15 big rubbermaids. Was going to go straight home, but had enough room in backseat for groceries =)

    I love this car.

3 hour drive each way to Tulsa Airport for a Disney Cruise. Similar load on another recent trip to an airport for vacation (only 2.5 hours each way that time).

Returning from a soccer tourney in Davis to Mill Valley by way of Stanford (hint: it's not on the way) to pick up a cousin and his dorm contents:
    3 adults, 1 teenager
    2 guitars in cases
1 large and heavy 100watt guitar amp
    2 large suitcases packed full
1 large green garbage bag filled with ? (old laundry?)
3 or 4 pairs of shoes
    1 small cooler
    2 foldup chairs
    1 beach umbrella
    1 soccer kit bag
And! we got 50mpg doing it. Unbelievable.

We recently purchased four very tall book cases at Costco (broken down, boxed, to be assembled at home). Each box had a mass of almost 200 lb. We drove a short distance home. Individual boxes were so heavy and long, I had to have two people assist me in removing each box from the liftback and get them into the house. We should have used our SUV, but the Prius performed very well.

How would the SUV have helped?

Woah - how did you do this without stuff falling into the back seat? Is there some sort of barrier you can put up in the back so that you can pack to the ceiling?

5 PCs, 5 LCD monitors, 2 mid-size boxes, 1 briefcase, and 1 driver. Could've put in a fair bit more if I wanted, but I didn't want to damage the LCD monitors.

I'm downsizing from an Explorer to my Prius. Other than really long items, the Prius should haul what I need hauled when I need haulin'...

We don't have ours yet, but we are hoping it'll take us camping for a week in Yosemite this summer with 3 adults, 1 child in a carseat, and all the camping & hiking gear needed for such a trip. We did not have the 3rd adult last year nor his gear, but everything else fit into DH's 2004 Camry.

completely removed the cover over the hidden cargo area...that allowed that area to be filled with the carry-ons. The duffles laid flat as did the pack & play. Kid's and wife's backpacks went under their feet....I could still see out the rear-view mirror (top window section only).

    Two such huge trips:

From IKEA once: A mattress, bed frame, dresser, nightstand, 2 sets of bedspread/sheets, and 2 pillows.

Regularly: 30 cases of ribs to go to a customer, each case is about 25 pounds. Put them all in the hatch, on the backseat that's folded down, and on the back floor stacked up high and can still see out of the back window (both sections!) The ribs are packaged up, so no leaking anything, or else I wouldn't be doing it! Also still have room for a passenger up front, if I would ever need to have one.

that would be my new universal gym with both of it's weight stacks - unassembled of course.

The largest box had to slide, upright, between the front seats resting on the center console and almost touched the rear view mirror. With that, the rear hatch barely closed. Weight stacks and other various boxes lined both sides of the cargo area. My fiance sat in the front passenger seat and said "whatever you do don't hit anything on the way home with all this weight in here!"

So I guess the short version of that is - two adults and a complete (but unassembled) universal gym.

4 adults, 4 sets of skis and poles and boots, 4 medium size backpacks (and you could still see out the back)

    or

    2 adults
    2 mountain bikes
    1 medium cooler
    1 tent
    2 sleeping bags
    1 box of food
    1 case of beer
    2 camping chairs
    2 small backpacks
    bike gear for 2
    misc camping gear
(and yes, you could still see out the back)

This goes to show that most people don't need roof racks or an SUV for outdoor fun.

    1X driver (150lbs)
    1X pasanger (190lbs)
    1x small dog (10lbs)
    1X crank case from a detroit Diesel 671 (50lbs)
    6X pistons(100lbs)
    1X flywheel (200lbs)
    2x crankshafts (200lbs)
1x vave cover full of parts (50lbs)
2x buckets full of metal parts (50lbs)

    Thats 1,000lbs
It still drove just fine and got 47mpg but scraped on a few speedbumps.

I could still see out the back if I used the rear-view but not if I turned around and looked.

    2 backpacks
1 duffel bag with gaming equipment (read: PS2)

whatever's left was filled with shopping from the States.

Also, if you noticed, 4x 24 roll tissue packs will fit PERFECTLY in the hatch. Exactly the height of the tonneau cover and fills the rectangular portion nicely. That meant the rest of the stuff from Costco went under the floor.
