What kind of map data does prime use?

Don't know, but I wouldn't do that, at least until you find out someone else has been the guinea pig and taken theirs out successfully. Just a guess, but if you were to eject the SD card, you might deactivate the navigation system.

 

My guess is that if u can eject the card with the car powered off I should be ok. But where wd u get your map data from? If it's from a source intended for your car, doesn't it tell you how to use it to update. If it.s not from a source intended for your car, then that seems to me to be more of a concern, that you will end up with a Nav system that doesn't work.

Car nav pricing is way out of date isn't it! Google And Here we Go both free with regular free map updates, for those who want to use their phone for navigation. And the updates are v easy to download, no messing with sd cards.
In the UK the Nav option for a Gen4 is £750 extra, for the models that don't include it. Seems like a price that's 10 yrs out of date!

I took mine out and yes, a warning message was displayed on the map. I did not attempt to examine the content of the file system with my computer. When I put the SD card back into the slot the Nav system was working properly again.

 

I doubt very seriously that you would be able to update the map yourself. This is a 'profit center', and the data is probably encrypted. And if they really wanted to be tough, they could use a serial number to lock the map to a specific car, because you can write to a memory card.
I remember on my 1st Prius, they used a non-standard DVD format to prevent copying. You could copy the data, you just couldn't write it to a DVD that would then work in the player. (inside to outside vs. outside to inside tracking)
Even Garmin maps need to be unlocked.

 

GM uses BringGo for the Sonic, Trax, Spark and overseas equivalents. I think it's $50, and its advantage over other phone nav aps is that it can display to the car's screen.

As much as I like to dump on Toyota for building really great cras that are backed up by crook dealers.....I just checked and my local (GM) dealer also charges 35 bucks for their Nav data.

The Earth will be orbiting a cold dead star before I submit to this level of thievery.
I may not be the smartest guy on the roads.........but I know how to read a map, and I have a tablet.

 

Last I checked, to update the dvd map in my 2010 was over $150.

 

It was at least $50 for my old Garmin.

 

Reason for supporter of Apple and Google with carplay/autoplay. My friend said GM does not come with nav on his Volt2. Has updated map all the time... and sort of free.

 

I thought I remembered seeing somewhere about the Navigation vendor but cannot remember now. But here is a screenshot of the software update screen if that helps. R10A5400 did not generate anything for me from Google search.

 

trust me, if you want to update the maps, you better have a good credit or debit card.

 

My only complaint about my new Prime is the absence of Android Auto (and the Apple equivalent). The Toyota Nav is so inferior to Google maps that I just can't use it. Hopefully Toyota will change its mind and provides software fix. But not too hopefull of that.

The Qi charger makes it very convenient to glance at the phone while using Waze or Google maps. And if you connect bluetooth audio, you can hear spoken directions. I do agree that Android Auto would be a big plus, but the built in Nav is not so bad as to be unusable. And I do like the Yelp integration as well as the find destination app that can save a destination to your address book. I see you have a premium, so I don't know if you have these in your entune app, but on the advanced, they are very nice.

 

Does anyone have the ability to upload the Prius Prime Navigation Manual to this site, similar to what some did for the Owners Manual?

I also understand there may be different manuals for the Plus and the Premium/Advanced models.
