That external filter looks like a good idea if you have lots of dirt & debris clogging up the filter. I've never had one need cleaning, probably because of not having pets and very rarely even having a back seat passenger.

regarding a filter, i don't carry pets, and there's nothing else to filter. my fans are clean as a whistle after 70k.

 

This is what I use, with dogs. The foam traps dirt and any of the smaller fur that "might"
sneak through. I just wash both is the sink, shake off and reinstall after laying in the
sun for 10 minutes or so. But you could just reinstall it.
The foam was just a few dollars.

 

Here’s a video by @NutzAboutBolts, for fan cleaning. It’s reg 3rd gen Prius, but v would be sim.

I’ve checked mine a couple of times, didn’t bother pulling the seat cushion off; it’s not really necessary: you can just reach through, there’s one bolt to remove. Also I just cleaned the fan blades without full removal of fan.
