I just bought a 2010 Prius. It has a small foldup tray in the top of the console box. I've already discovered this thing is useless. If you need to get in the box under it you have to tip it up and spill out whatever was in it. Can anyone tell me what this supposedly was design for. thanks.

It is intended to introduce small loose objects into the bottom of the storage compartment. Give it a try by loading it with some loose change and a couple of earrings, then tip it up. It works like a charm.

It's to hold an iPod/iPhone/Smart Phone/mp3 player. There's a USB port nearby for a connection.

It's also great for recycling your alum cans.

Place empty can upright on tray and slam down the cover. Crush. Wah-la.

That's what I use it for. It even has a cutout in the front for the cables. Therefore, OP, it is not worthless...

You're too late, Tom already enlightened the OP to its use. Holding an IPOD/IPHONE is just a bonus at this point.

You learn something every day. I'm going to move my ipod from the cupholder to that formerly useless tray, thanks all:cheer2:

I took mine out, too. It's on a basement shelf somewhere. At first, it seemed like a good spot for coins, but now they go in a film* can in the glove box** instead.

    * an ancient form of recording photographic images.

** I've heard that some people used to wear special gloves for driving, but I'm not old enough to actually remember it. The name for the place to keep them seems to have stuck. ;)

We have determined that there is no useful purpose for us having such an object in our vehicle.

As others have alluded, it's to hold an mp3 player. I prefer the older style where it's completely detached and just sits on the top, rather than the current design where it's hinged.

The mp3 player in use (usually my wife's 32Gb Creative Zen X-Fi). It's very convenient.

I still have some of that film stuff in a desk drawer at home. It's probably bad, but I was hoping one day it would become so extinct that mine would somehow suddenly become valuable as a collectors item :D.

I still follow Tom's use of the tray for coins. In fact, my brother followed it so well, I still haven't emptied all the coins from the lower compartment.

That's the clunky older version of music devices. Nowdays, a 32gb music fob gets lost way to easy:

Just what I use it for, seemed pretty obvious when we bought the car with the USB connection & wire cut out. :D

That being said I love the other ideas too. :heh:
