My 2018 Camry Hybrid came with Entune and this terrible Scout Link GPS setup. I've heard that they added Apple Car Play to the newer models.

Any word on an Android version?

If I went and got an Apple Phone could my 2018 be updated to include Car Play or is this a physical change?

If it parts are required which parts?

head units vary by model and year, so you really have to look at the ones you're interested in.

pretty much everything has CarPlay in 2020, but they just announced android, so that will take awhile.

you might have to install a new head unit to get CarPlay, but i think they announced some potential updates that would add it to older.

    Rav4 hybrid gets android auto.

But I don't get it. I live in a metro area that has maybe 30 FM stations. I have real time navigation and bluetooth phone access via the head unit and the phone. I have no interest in Pandora, streaming, Sirus, aux inputs. So I have no great interest in Android Auto or its apple equivalent CarPlay (I refuse to pay the Apple tax on anything). I use a cheap $170 droid phone which does everything I want at the right price. I should also say I'm not computer illiterate. I spent 37 years in the IT world and have managed OS development for commercial products rated most secure by three letter agencies and hold a patent. So it isn't like I an a Luddite. 90%+ of my trips are 10 miles or less, why bother with anything beyond radio. And I focus on safe driving, I don't want to be wandering around a screen like I do on a tablet or phone when not driving.

Me either. I prefer peace and quiet on the road.

Google Maps would be a huge improvement over Scout however. Scout is not the best and they want to charge for it. Google Maps is better and it is free. Lot to like about that.

Like you, I don't need a GPS most days but during our once a year vacation a NAV/GPS is very handy.

Google Maps isn't perfect and has sent us on some thrilling adventures so I actually prefer to have more than one GPS in case one is acting goofy.

Of course I can use Google Maps straight from the phone but the display is just too small. The vehicle's display is the way to go.

Any Toyota dealer can install CarPlay in your 2018 Camry Hybrid. Had it done in our 2018 Camry Hybrid LE and it works great. No parts necessary for the installation. CarPlay is so much better than Entune and Scout, and CarPlay has been updated for iPhones running the latest version of iOS 13.

This is great to hear, exactly what I was hoping for. Thing is I don't have an iPhone so I either need to wait for Android Auto or get an iPhone...

Our Android phones are still on contract for another year so switching now would be expensive.

Haven't heard anything about being able to retrofit AA to my 2019 Rav4h limited. Had I waited another 2 years I could have had a plug-in with AA.

Toyota actually just sent me a notice suggesting I should take my car in for the update.

Man I looked all over for that silly letter, turns out it was an email! From the email:

Remember to add Apple CarPlay® 1 and Amazon Alexa2 to your CAMRY HYBRID

If you haven't done so already, schedule an appointment with your preferred servicing dealer. Available with 2018 Camry and Sienna vehicles only. Dealer installation fee may apply.
