I was just looking at some pics on the Toyota site and saw a pic of the gear selector. I understand R N D. but, what is B?
It's for "Brake" and it's used when you're going down a long hill; sorta like dropping down a gear. It's not aways necessary, but when the battery is full you start working on the mechanical brakes. That would be a good time to use the "B" position. Just be sure to go back to Drive when you're at the bottom.
Hi Spoon, welcome to PriusChat. You can find a lot of answers with the Search tool at the top of every page. B-mode has been the topic of many discussions and much analysis. Like aaf709 said, it's for engine braking. You might use it coming down the mountain if you're on the Big Island, but you won't need it just driving around.
B was added to the shifter to provide many fun hours of Prius Chatting, and has proved to be the most popular question ever. Tom

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(aaf709 @ Jul 31 2007, 10:04 AM) </div> I thought it stood for "Bounce", which is sort of a low altitude ejection seat: Hit the B lever and bounce them out of the passenger seat. That explains why it doesn't work for me. Tom
